I'm a newbie so please be kind. MY 95 Talon TSI AWD has a rough idle. The idle floats between 950 and 1000 rpm. The car is hard to start in the cold weather. It has 65m miles and the timing belt was replaced 2m miles ago. The idle has been off since the new timing belt was put on. Now another dealer has replaced several sensors and the fuel pump to a tune of $1300. Now they tell me that the valves are bent and the car needs a valve job and possibly rings because the 1 cylinder is leaking down. This is due to the timing belt being off by one tooth. The car runs great and is very strong the only problems are the idle float and cold start problems. I guess my question is this " can the car run good, sound good, not smoke with a bent valve? I need some advise before I get yanked again.
Thanks for any replies.

Thanks, I'm trying to get my answers together because they are going to call tomorrow. I didn't think that the car could run so strong with a bent valve.

First, I would tell them to put your old working sensors and fuel pump back and refund your $1300. Then pay them the $85 dianostics fee and take your car outta there, sounds like they're either dishonest or just don't know what they're doing. If your're spending that kind of money, take it to a known DSM shop.

Have they check the IAC?

Have they done a leak test on the intake system?

I doubt it. Dealers, for the most part, just throw parts at a car hoping it will fix it. After you have spent a ton of money then they start to get into the hard diagnoses. My car does the same thing your does and it is the TB. It has a few leaks, but I am a bit tied up with other stuff, IE lazy, and havent fixed it yet. It wont hold an idle when cold and when it does it start out at about 600 or so then moves up to 1K when warm. If I pop the hood I can here a hissing from the TB and the idle jumps up when I hit the TB with carb cleaner.

You need to be off more than one tooth to lose valves. Also ask them for leak down numbers dont just take there word for anything. Remember they are a business trying to make money.

Good luck.

Oh believe me I'll get the numbers from them. They said that they did a test on the TB and It's OK but they still replaced a sensor on the TB a coil pack, wires, plugs, fuel filter, and the fuel pump. I'm sure that there is more but the reciepts are in the car. MY new mantra is "if it ain't broke, don't fix it"

my advice to u is this. After the dealer fixes ur car, find a local dsmer who knows his shit and get him to do the work on ur car from now on...it will save u money and keep u from hearing bullshit from dealers who just wanna make money off u (not all but most).

good luck

 And I thought I was the only one who did this. :thumb:

It sounds like you are not very familiar with DSM's. That's not a slam, just an assessment of your situation. If that is true (be honest with yourself) take it to AMS in Arlington Heights. Do not question, second guess, wonder or doubt my advice. They are rock-solid EXPERTS with DSM's! And no I don't work there, I just know their reputation. If you're serious about your DSM join the Chicago DSM Club while you're at it.

Your are right, I'm not very familiar with DSMs as I said in my first post. I took it back to the shop that did the timing belt and they reset the valve timing. Car appears to run like a champ again. All I can say is be careful of Luxury motors in Orland Park. They even said that the District Manager of Mitsubishi looked at the car and and recommended a complete engine replacement. I have his name if anyone is interested send me an email. They also suggested that I put a non-turbo motor in the car. They did not have a price on the turbo motor. Oh well live and learn.
