Helicoil stripped now what?

Ok, I was given the car by my brother. He helicoiled all the threads on the turbo. A turbo bolt snapped and I drilled the bolt used an easy out and removed the bolt. Problem is the threads holding the helicoli broke and the helicoil came out with it. Saturday will be the earliest I can get back to the garage with the tap to see if there is enough metal left to just thread in the same size helicoil. I'm not holding my breath for that to work. So obviously doubleing up on helicoils is probably a bad idea. Are there thicker helicoils out there? What would be the logical next step?

I have no idea about the helicoils available out there, but you need to figure out why this keeps happening. Usually it is because of overtorquing, using the wrong grade bolt, or not using the correct lock washers. The factory lock washers prevent the last bolt from hitting the bottom of one of the holes, the same hole that uses a stud from the factory.
 
first off. Heli coils suck total balls.

You need to use a machined threaded insert.

the brand name that comes to mind is Time-sert. these are sold through Wurth dealers and other various channels.

However, you can get generic ones at most parts stores.

i would ask why not just drill it out and through bolt it, but whatever.

there site has pretty much all the info on how to use them. if you look at them you will see the insert is what sets them apart. learn to spot this insert instead of a coil in the package and you will have the much much better way to repair threads.

Another interesting note is time serts are stackable. the OD tap is the next size up same thread pitch as teh inside.

So lets say you blow a hole out with a heli coi. Drill it out to the big enough insert to repair the hole and make it round again. then just screw inserts into one another using the staking tool for each size to set them. dont forget green loctite!

That is all.

Well this is the first time I know of that the bolt broke. I believe that he had a bolt break in the Turbonetics he was running and ran across a thread on here that convinced him that the helicoils would prevent a bolt from braking so he helicoiled the PTE before he ever installed it.

I just purchased TimeSert's "Big-Sert" kit part number is 5012. (Sized M10x1.25 our Turbo Bolt thread size and pitch)

This is designed to repair an oversize hole that has been damaged like mine.

I shopped around a bit and it was $80 for the kit I got mine off of Ebay new. Used sets were found cheaper.

I took my turbo to have the same thing done and the machinist said helicoils wouldn't last in the turbine housing. He used a thread insert and it has been fine.
 
Best solution is to stop using the system that seizes. Bolting into an exhaust housing causes tons of problems. I use the stock bolts unless i have a problem. First sign of an issue, i drill out the housing, and use bolts and nuts. If the nut seizes on the bolt, you can just break the bolt with an impact, or large breaker bar. Nothing stuck in anything.

I considered this as I just converted my oil pan and valve cover to studs because you gain clamping force this way also but the ARP turbo bolts I bought look soo good LOL

good find on the big-serts i never knew they made a oversized kit too....bad ass :)

next time the turbo comes off im time-serting all the exh studs :) and banjo bolt too!!!
