Right now my headgasket is leaking oil and I wanted to know that since my headgasket is leaking could it cause my car to accelerate slow.

ugh WTF ...let me clean that up a bit...

"Right now my headgasket seems to be leaking oil and I was wondering if my leaking headgasket could be causing my car to accelerate poorly"

now that my brain doesn't hurt anymore, sure it will. Losing compression will definately cause your car to accelerate poorly. Fix it as soon as possible and until you do, ensure that you keep an eye on your oil level...last thing you want is to seize your engine from oil starvation before you can fix it :talon:

thats easier said than done, head gaskets on DOHC are no fun... plus shops usually quote you ridiculous amounts to fix them... mine currently has a minor leak, it spits a bit of oil, enough to irritate me, and while i havent found a shop that will give me a reasonable quote, i live in dorms where we arent allowed to do any maintenence.:dsm:

I just wanted to quote that so BCESI could read it again :D . Anyway, are you sure the HG is leaking? A leaking cam seal can appear to be a leaking HG. Just for fun you might want to check that out.

if yours is leaking a little bit- it is probably the gasket seal. my 95 did this and i replaced it, and it stopped the problem. The part was like 25 bones. take it easy

what would be the best way for me to know that my cam seals are leaking.
Follow the trail. Before you clean anything look at the cam seal area. See if you have a line of oil going down to head gasket. Don't just look straight down from seal. Follow any leakage. What happens a lot is the oil leaks down to the gasket then just follows the gasket line around. If you see nothing (or anything for that matter), clean the areas thoroughly with a rag and carb + choke (both below the seal and around the headgasket). then run for a while and check again. Though for headgasket you should check compression, see if coolant in oil or oil in coolant.

I was just looking for the leak and it is located at the back of the block leaking right behind the back exhaust mainifold Can that be the headgasket leaking.

if its the back of the block then its leaking on the intake manifold... basically you want to isolate whether or not its the valve cover or the head. valve covers are very easy to change and can be done quickly with limited tools while the head is a little more complex and requires some special tools like a torque wrench. if its above the intake manifold, odds are its the valve cover gasket... pics would be better... :dsm:

I just had my valve cover changed a couple months ago and the oil is leaking below the intake manifold.

if its below the valve cover then odds are your looking at a new headgasket, the only other thing that i could think of is possibly the cam sensor, but thats toward the front right side so if your leaking on the back that probably wouldnt be it :dsm:

I'd like to thank the academy... LOL!

I am leaking oil on my 97 Talon wtih 75K miles a pretty good amount. I'd say 2-3 quarts every 3K miles. Been going on for 6K miles. I had it into the dealer about 2K miles ago for them to determine what is wrong. They said oil is leaking from the head gasket and the cam sensor. How can I verify if they are correct in that it's both? I ask because the quote on the head gasket is $900 whereas the cam sensor gasket is about $100 total to fix. I just want to double check. Any way for me to check from looking from above. I don't have stands and as you know there is no way of seeing much underneath the car. I do notice that the oil (I can see underside of car some) is more towards the right side of motor. Is this the cam sensor? I also have not noticed any coolant in the oil or vice versa.

the came angle sensor is held on by two nuts and it's a typical O ring gasket. $100 for a .54 cent part from autozone and NO MORE than 10 minutes of your time? Seriously....the head gasket while more involved is a $85 part (multi layer) and approx a weekend if that's all you're doing. Remove wiring, fuel rail/injectors, couple other small things. How much is your time worth?

all of these things take valuable time that usually ends up being on the weekend. I don't have the whole weekend to spend pulling the whole cylinder head off.

The cam sensor gasket on the other hand seems manageable. Thanks.
