Courtice,
should i pre-tighten all bolts to say, 50 pounds.. then tighten the first one to 72, and so on?
or is this bad. Its a brand new gasket

I have a 92 and ive been told its 72 pounds of torque.
any tips would be great for my head rebuild. THANKS PEOPLE :D:talon:

Yes you should do it in steps to help the gasket seal properly. Do you know the torque pattern also? I usually do it in 3 steps, but thats using head studs...

i believe its..
4 6 9 7 1
2 8 10 5 3
(FRONT OF CAR)
is this correct? thanks for the help

This is not correct. Are you using arp headstuds or stocker, did you check the stockers for stretch?
Torque in order
start at below for stock head bolts.
1 20 lb ft
2 40 lb ft
3 65 lb ft
Tighten in this order

10..6..1..3..7
8...4...2..5..9
Front of car turbo sits here

I have done more then 20 head jobs, above is what i do granted there is alot more to know and check (warped head, surface deck clean, block deck, tap and die, etc) thats the sequence i tighten.

I do not have a turbo, its an esi not tsi. does this affect the torquing sequence ??
should i still do the pattern you said? or

4 6 9 7 1
2 8 10 5 3
(FRONT OF CAR)

Why do you keep making new threads about the same thing when I already answered your question (this is the third one between today and yesterday)? Do you not believe what I have said or something?

Here is what I posted in your other thread. "Do at least three steps in the torque process, 25, 50, 75. I would use 5w30 if using the stock head bolts. If you use arp head studs then use the arp moly lube that comes with them."

"The stock head bolts should be torqued to 72 ft/lbs. The bolts should be taken off the head in the order of the following diagram. They should be installed opposite of the diagram.

4 6 9 7 1

2 8 10 5 3

Front of car.

Make sure there is no oil in the holes before you put the studs in also. Oil in those holes could cause a cracked block"

I am 100% positive what I am saying is correct. If I wasn't I wouldn't post it.

There is no reason to post three threads about the same thing because of being new.

I always torque head bolts in the proper sequence, at 30lbs, 60lbs, and the 75lbs for stock nonstretch bolts.

You can reuse the head bolts form the 2.0 liter 6 bolts. The 7 bolts use stretch bolts and they cannot be reused.

If you do decide to get new head bolts buy some ARP's those are a must when you rebuild your head.

ARP's are not a MUST they are good insurance. If they were a must then that would mean the car can't run with stock head bolts. And they are not needed since he has a non turbo.

where can i purchase arp headbolts? local parts store? and i went to canadian tire to purchase a headgasket, they only had one kind, should i return it and get a better one??? i plan on keeping my talon forever, i love it

The stock head gasket is good for you. I would just use stock head bolts on your car also. I think the people recommending ARP head studs think you have a turbo model.

Old i know but this is completely backwards from the manual as well as everything you re tought as a tech. Always start in the middle and work your way out
