Head swap

hi, im new to this site and to the 2g eclipse, i have a 3g eclipse, im looking at buying a 97eclipse sypder with the 4g64, from what ive found its the same motor thats in my current car but with less horese power, i was just wondering if there are any head swaps i can do to get dohc, and how reliable are the 4g64's in the 2g, any input on this is appreciated, thanks

I'm pretty positive that your car is a v6? So how you come across your 3g motor being the same as a 2g motor; is beyond me. Considering the 2gs are all 4 cylinders. But im pretty sure your able to use the 4g64 block and put a 4g63 head on to it. (correct me if im wrong)

Reliablity is really based off owner and maintenance...


Welp; i corrected myself and looked up on it.. i had no idea your 3g motor had a 4 cylinder motor as well. So yes, that motor is the 4g64..

Yes, the 4g63 head will bolt up. The 4g64 is just a larger displacement due to a different crank and the block is slightly taller in comparison to the 63.

i know i know, i sorry haha. Misread it. But yeah the 3g motor is the 4g64 if you have the 4 cylinder.. (but theres a v6 and thats what i thought ALL 3g had.. haha)

But; there's a swap because i know for a fact that people use the 4g64 block with the 4g63 head! All depends on how knowledgable you are with cars/dsms and how much money and time you wanna spend. ^^ nice link Liquid i found that as soon as i read your post!

thanks for the link and the info, i got one more question though, i did some searching and found a guy that said no you canot put an evo 8 head on that year block he never said why?, but if its the same motor in the 2g as in my 3g and the dohc swap to do with a 3g is the evo 8 head or a cheaper but similar kia head swap, why wont the evo 8 head fit the 2g block?

Because the 4G64 in your car is backwards from the 4G64 in DSMs and earlier Galants..

Both the 2g spider and the 3g have 4g64s. Difference is the one in the spyder has timing side on driver side and is the NARROW block. This will mount in a dsm no prob and also match the 63 head. The 3g engine has timing on passenger side and is the WIDE block aka evo style. This will not bolt into a dsm or a 63 trans/head. I have pics on pro showing the diff. I currently run my self built frankenstein 63/64
