head studs

first things first the headgasket blew on my 92 tsi so i got a new mls headgasket and some arp headstuds.

So my questions are how much torque to fasten the head and what is the torque order.

I hope you know what i mean thanks for your advice in advance.

Well, first thing to clarify is if you've had the Head or Block surfaces checked for imperfections?

The torque specs should have come in the box with the arp studs

92 is a 1g six bolt.. 12mm studs

Hope you have the surfaces of the block and head prepped for a MLS Head gasket, if you do not, go pick up a OE or Fel-pro composite

thanks for the advice guys but that brings another up another question.

i had the head milled but not the block. will i not be able to use the mls headgasket? i also bought a topline head gasket set should i just use the headgasket in the kit if i didnt mill the block?

I will not say you can not run a MLS HG on a non-milled block, you may be one of the lucky few whose block is in good enough shape wher it dose not need milled.

How many times has the HG popped on this block? is this the first? the third? Do you know?

How was your head surfaced? Can you post a decent pic of the gasket surface of the head?

How much do you understand about gasket sealing? and the surfaces required?

Just to add - Tighten from the inside of the head out, not the outside in.

this is the second time and the head was done by xact machining and the gasket surface looks like the one you posted where its really shiny like a mirrored finish.
i dont have a camera to post a picture.

It's not just the head surface that needs to be good, it's the block surface as well.

Its ok about the pic.

Clean and check the block for warp.... if you can get a .002 feeler gauge under the bar, use a composite HG

Check that there is no debris or coolant/oil/water in the bottom of the head bolt holes, and make sure you put a nice dab of that moly lube that comes with. I usually put a light pass or two of copper spray down on the MLS HGs.

BTW don't follow the ARP instructions for increasing the torque w/ motor oil if you don't have the molly lube. make sure you tighten the head studs completely in the block.

Just to clarify you are referring to duecevr4's post, correct?

Yes. The reason Arp specifies a higher torque value when using oil, is due to increased friction. The arp moly grease lubricates better than oil; therefore, less force is lost to friction. So please listen to the torque specs provided by arp.
