I have a 2g head and I will be port-matching it to a 1g intake manifold. There is like a 3/8" difference in the size of the intake hole (1g is larger). Is there enough meat on the 2g head to open it up enough to match the 1g intake? Anyone done this?

Yes it can be done. Check out www.ffwdconnection.com and look at their level V head i believe (can't remember exact number off hand, it's their "highest" level head), you'll notice that they use a 2g head and port the bejheezus out of it.

Why are you bothering to port out a 2g head instead of just using a 1g one in the first place if you're only going to port-match it to a 1g intake mani......?

Because I already have a 2g and a 2g head. Before I decided to get a 1g intake manifold, I did a nasty port & polish job on the 2g head. Therefore it is of great value to me!

Plus now you don't have to worry about swapping the cam angle sensor and water pipe. You should consider putting in a set of 1g MT cams while your head is off...they offer a bit more duration and lift than the 2g ones and are a fairly cheap upgrade.

That brings up another question I have. I understand the dire need of bigger cams in a N/T car, but when there is boost involved, to me it seems like it wouldn't be as necessary. Bigger cams let in more air and fuel, but with boost, air and fuel is being forced in there anyway. It seems that just adding more boost will do the same thing as a bigger cam. Am I right?

Umm, I hope you have some carbide bits (rotary files...if you don't have these, take it somewhere). I'm doing one now, 4 hours and I'm half done (porting it really deep like you need to). It just drags on, but it is going to be so bolt-on!

Well more aggressive cams on a turbo car will allow engine to breathe alot better. Its not a good first mod for a car, but once you start running out of options its a very potent one. The cams from a 1g MT car don't offer near the lobing of say a set of HKS 264 or 272...but they do give you a big more top end breathing room for cheap...as long as the head is coming off anyways.

It isn't necessary to pull the head in order to change the cams, is it? The cams will stay stock for now, since I (and probably everyone on here) think that the next necessary step comes in 3 parts - turbo, FMIC, and clutch. I'm surprised I haven't gotten flamed by people yet for having ALL this stuff done, and still a stock turbo and SMIC!

It's all about the money.

I have a set of 1g turbo manual trans cams that you can have if you pay the shipping. PM me

Yeah, luckily I just picked up a few carbide bits. I wish I got courser ones. They keep filling up with aluminum. I have 11 hrs and 15 minutes in the porting so far!

It wont fill with aluminum as much if you use lower speeds, it will take a little longer but wont fill them as bad.:dsm:
