Hello so I removed the head to change head gasket, studs and put new cams in... Should I clean the head, should i take everything apart and clean it or just spray some carb cleaner on it and let it drain my valves are pretty cruddy should I spray them down with carb cleaner thanks guys... What should I be cautious about when doing it

you dont want to clean it with degreaser or carb cleaner. It will dry out your valve seals and then the head will burn oil by leaking it past the valve stem seals.

Stock head? How many miles?

I would recommend sending it to a machine shop to get a 3 angle valve job while its off and get new Viton valve stem seals from RRE installed.

Depending on your goals and budget, a nice set of springs and retainers would be a reasonably priced upgrade. BogusSVO on this site has mentioned testing many sets of stock valve springs that were pretty far below service specs for seat pressure.

More than you probably bargained for, but since the head is off its easier to just go ahead and get it all done. Pulling a head is a fair amount of work and I like to do it right the first time to minimize down time later on. I fall victim to the saying of "while its apart, I might as well replace..."

yea i got bc 272 cams, arp studs, and mitsu mls hg, it was taken to the machine shop to get checked they said there was no need to deck it so they just fixed a stripped manifold bolt

Well they are wrong or they didn't know you were using an MLS HG. If they knew about the MLS, get a new machine shop.

You have a high probability of pushing coolant under boost if it isn't decked properly. Just do a search for people having sealing issues with an MLS, and some of these people even got it resurfaced but just not a good enough finish. Some just didn't surface the block. It needs a mirror-like finish and a perfect sealing surface. I am sure some get lucky, but I was never a gambling man.

yea thats what i told them and there like dude weve been doing this for years i was like ok LOL they said they see engines pusing over 26 pds of boost on a non decked head with a metal hg... But ima take it to this place down in Reading, PA seem to be a highly recomended place

I clean my heads with carb cleaner. I don't spray it directly on the head though. I use a straight razor to get residue from the old HG off, then I use a rag with carb cleaner sprayed on it to get the last bit off...which usually isnt much. This way you avoid spraying down parts of the head you don't need to. Note, this is only for a good known straight head. If it may have even overheated...get it decked.

If you're trying to do it on the cheap, go get a Fel-Pro HG and spray that sumbitch down with copper spray. I've never had one fail on me. I've used 3 of them...all pushing 25+ #'s on a 16g to a 20g.

i doubt the stock springs will handle the 272 cams you have. I have had good results with the BC springs and stock retainers...

As far as te gasket surfaces go... if the block deck surface has ever been cleaned with a rol-loc good chance it needs to be milled to get a good surface. The head needs to be milled on a top of the line machine. NOT A BELT SANDER or a rotoray broach.

also have the head measured at all 4 corners from the VC rail to the gasket surface.. Mitsu spec is a total combine surfacing of head and block of .008 AERA allows .015 from the head
AREA spec for NEW hed thickness is 5.200 and a min spec of 5.185 if your head is past min speck get a thicker head gasket to restore the thickness.

also you may concider doing this mod.....

hope this helps and happy wrenching!!
