Hey all. I'm relatively new to the DSM world and was wondering if anyone has had a problem similar to what I am having with my car. I recently bought a 93 Talon AWD turbo with right at 99k on it. The car is equipped with Nology (hotwires?) I think and also has a K&N filter in the stock housing. I'm not sure if it has any other mods or not as I have been driving it daily rather than working on it. Here is the problem that I have been experiencing. The car usually seems to idle a little too low, like around 500-600 rpm's. I have also noticed that sometimes when I go to shift from drive to reverse or vice/versa, the engine will idle up to like 2000 rpm's when I hit neutral then come back down to normal. I also have an acceleration issue. The car seems sluggish most times when accelerating from a stop or low speed and it also surges/hesitates during part throttle acceleration. Once I get up to around 45 and it shifts into O/D, the acceleration pretty much smooths right out and if you start getting into the throttle, it accelerates cleanly. It seems to be boosting ok, at least according to the factory guage, maybe around 9-10 lbs or so at full throttle. Also, the surging is not as pronounced from a low speed if I am at wide open throttle, I can still feel it, but not as badly if at all. It also seems like that when I drive the car for longer periods of time (hotter temps?) the surge sometimes goes away completely or is barely noticeable. Three times in the last 3 weeks, right after a cold start, the check engine light came on and the car would barely accelerate. If I lightly gave it gas and shifted the trans manually and kept the rpm's up, I could get it to accelerate and eventually it would smooth out. (As the car warmed up?) I am going to pick up a fuel filter tomorrow for preventative maintenance, although I have doubts that this is causing my problem as the car seems to run ok at higher speeds/WOT. I did put in a new set of Autolite Copper Plus plugs gapped at .28 and didn't notice any difference in the surge. The plugs that I took out were Bosch Platinums. Should I replace the wires? Should I try a different plug? Wouldn't a bad wire cause problems all the time not just at part throttle? I was just wondering if this was a problem that another DSM'er had run into with their car and new something obvious to look at. I posted previously, and was informed that I should check plugs/wires/filter and maybe do a leak test, which I will try to get done sometime early this week. I also wanted to note that the car pulls really strong right up to the redline, no missing out or anything like that. In fact, I am more than impressed with the top end performance of the car as it really pulls strong, it just seems to have trouble down low in the rpm/speed range. If anyone else has had a similar problem, I would really appreciate some more input! Thanks!
