I have the Hallman Pro manual boost controller, and I can't get it to go over 21 psi (ish) . Is there a way to upgrade to the stiffer spring? Where would I find a stiffer spring? Or do I just need to get a new MBC?

Isn't that what the MBC controller is controlling though? The amount of boost getting to the wastegate? O o
Technically yes, but if your wastegate spring is too soft then it will open up regardless of the MBC because it can't hold the pressure.

Also, the Hallman Pro is able to raise the boost higher than the Hallman Pro RX. FYI, I was using the regular Hallman Pro at 35psi of boost so it should be able to handle your boost.

If you want to try to upgrade to a stiffer spring, you can email Hallman directly.

Yes you can Erik. We run three springs in all our controllers. You just have to cannibalize some clicker pens and rob the springs out of those.

And if this is still the small 16g, you may have a hard time making much more than 21psi at our altitude. The td05 based turbos hate our elevation.

you should call me and I can help you through these issues. We have been there a hundred times over the past 15 years.

I will be home from 2-6 Saturday. I am working or busy the rest of the weekend.

What wastegate is on it? If it's an mhi 20g from fp the wastegate it comes with won't hold much boost at all, even with the line disconnected. Exhaust back pressure can blow open a wastegate regardless of the boost controller.

a good test of wastegate strength is to hold the wastegate in one hand and try to pull the actuator arm with your other hand.
that is how much force it takes for your exhaust back pressure to blow your wastegate flapper open.
i can pretty easily pull a mitsu arm an inch.
i cannot pull my modified holset arm by hand.
the 20g you have is creating lots of exhaust pressure at 20psi and the mitsu one was only designed to handle 12-14 psi.
the holset ones start at 20psi. they are designed for high boost applications - diesels.
i read somewhere that a boost controller will double your wastegate spring strength, but above that you have to upgrade.
when i put on my td05 20g i had the same problem as you. i upgraded my wastegate and my boost controller works again.
its a fun mod and the wastegate works so much better. wish i could post the link to justins thread on it.

I did this and added a spring to my MBC, and I'm already boosting higher now. Awesome DIY fix, thanks for showing me this! :thumb:
