i am going to be removing my engine and tranny very soon and have a question about the half shaft removal. i have removed every thing and went to tug on it and it felt like it came out but when i looked the shaft was in the boot but the boot was attached to a green metal peice that was attached to the tranny. now my question is how do i remove that green metal piece from the tranny without doing any damage to either part.

thanks, steve

when you pulled on the axle it felt like it came out but it was still in the tranny?, just take a pry bar and pop it out your not going to hurt it. If you pulled on your axle and the boot allowed the shaft to slide through it, then it sounds like you need a new half shaft,i would just get a remanufactured half shaft from your local napa/shucks there about $60.

Ok im not sure if I understand this right, when you say half shaft your talking about the axle extenion on the the driver side right?

It seems like all you did is pull the cv joint/knuckle out off the boot partcialy (the green cup in the tranny).

When I pulled my motor the first time I droppped the suspension and removed the bolts holding the halfshaft on the motor, took a pry bar and popped the axles out of the tranny. Though rember to replace the axle seals in the tranny. I ended up tearing one and my tranny leaked when I put it all back togather. :thumbdown

If you still have problems with taking the axles out of the tranny, so you can pull your motor. You could also get some tin snips, and cut the metal ring off the axle boot and the axle cup, and just pull the cv joint out. Cover it with a sandwich baggy and rubber band on the cv joint and the green cup. Once your done dropping back in the motor remove the baggys and use a zip tie to temporaraley hold the boot on, and take it to a CV shop and have them repack the boots and put new boot rings on.

Hope this helps, if you need help pm me.

The green part is the TJ (tripod joint) casing.

On a FWD both sides have a snap ring holding the TJ casing in the trans and has to be pryed loose. You carefully put a pry bar between the trans case and the TJ case and apply pressure intil it pops free making sure not to damage the oil seal in the process.

You can't pull on the axle since it isn't actually attached to the TJ casing it just rides in it so that the axle can move in and out as your suspension moves. The only thing holding the two together is the boot.

hey, thanks for your help, its been a few days since i was last here but i got them out by cutting the metal ring on the boot. i tried prying the tj case off but the pry bar i used was a little too big for the job and i didnt feel like going and getting one. no problem though, because i work for chrysler and can get it done for cost of parts.

regards, steve
