half shaft bracket bolts broke in block!

what would cause both bolts on my awd half shaft to shear in two and leave the threads in the block. knowing my luck this is something unusual and no one will have an answer.
 
i did use locktite. has anyone removed the bolts without removing the motor? doesnt seem like a lot of room to work. i have an easy out set but just need a way to get a drill in there.
 
I think you need to pull the motor to get them out. I had both of mine back out and my halfshaft came out of the transmission, I got lucky.
 
well..if you are lucky you should be able to stick you finger in there and unscrew the threads if not you should take a deep breath and start working..took me and my buddy like 5 hours to pry one of these suckers out a while back....little space...i know...little space
 
I believe you can do it without pulling the motor, I had to do the same thing with my 2g GSX. Disconnect the front and rear motor mounts and loosen the lateral mounts (left/right). I think we just loosened the entire crossmember, if I remember correctly. This allows the motor to swing foward and back a bit and gives you some room to work with. Then, make more room by removing the downpipe. We also had to remove the entire steering rack, which can be a hassle, but I'm pretty sure is requisite to have enough room to work. Make sure you drain the power steering fluid and disconnect the steering shaft (along with the tie rod ends and some subframe pieces, I believe) before dropping it down. After that, use lifting straps on the engine to angle it downward (so the broken bolts are facing more towards the ground) and drill out the broken bolts. I then went and got two new OEM carrier bearing bolts, and torqued them down to spec with Loctite Red. Haven't had a repeat problem so far, although I haven't had a whole lot of driving to be sure it won't happen again.
