GVR4 1st gear is weaker than the DSM 1st!

Yep, everywhere I've read the GVR4 1st gear is supposed to be stronger. Well, after I ripped the teeth off of 3 of them I started thinking something's up. Remember the the input shaft is around a $100 and the 1st gear is like $85. Plus it screws up other gears in the tranny when the teeth let go.

So I called J Shepard today and asked him why I keep ripping the teeth off 1st gear. He asks, What 1st gear are you using. I say, GVR4. He says well, that's your problem. Go back to the dsm 1st gear. He also says there is a big strength difference between the two. As in the DSM 1st gear is much stronger.

So if the this is the case, and I've never hurt a DSM 1st gear, why do certain shops/people say the GVR4 is stronger???


Thanks for any input. This is getting really expensive. That Magnus dog box is looking very nice. Anyone know how much they are? Oh, I really don't launch my car that hard. I only 60' in the 1.75 range, I run on 17" street tires, and it spins a pretty good amount. Maybe the 2.4 has something to do with it. This is a fully built car and my best pass to date was a 11.01@129

Who told you it's stronger? All I have heard is that It's weaker and longer gear.

Says it right there on Team Rips site. GVR4 1st gear, about 6 mph taller and has stronger teeth.

I think I'll go with Shepard's word.

You have a TRE trans, But do you have the GVR4 1st??? I'm not at all hard on my parts. I only launch this car at the track, and my traction is not that great. I mean 1.75 60 footers is nothing to praise about. Hell, my wife's 13 second Talon 60 foot's better than my car. I could understand ripping teeth off if I had slicks all the way around and pulling like 1.4X's 60 footers. Also, I've been into DSM's for 7 years now and I've never hurt a DSM 1st gear, So I will never go with another GVR4 1st.

As everyone must know by now, I never liked GVR4 first gear. I think that it does not give you enough mechanical advantage to launch a heavy AWD car. In order to properly launch it, you really need to slip the clutch to gain back some of that mechanical advantage, so at that point, you may just as well use a DSM 1st gear…

The fact that it is weaker only reinforces my dislike for that tranny option .
