i was thinking about guttin my cat, but before i do i was wonderin if anyone who has done it can tell me if it added any power or if it will just make it annoyingly loud tia!

Don't gut the cat on an N/T. A little backpressure helps with low end torque on a naturally aspirated car. I tried this on my old GS and all it did was stink and make more noise. I immediately changed it out for a high flow 2.5" and the bottom end power was much better.

Hope that helps,

Andy

Yeah, I'd recommend a high-flow cat on an N/A car. Magnaflow has good quality high flow cats. If you buy one on eBay, make sure you actually get a cat; many hollow resonators are sold there as "high flow cats."

Offhand, mine was a Catco universal 2.5" that I purchased from Summit Racing. There's a lot of truth to what Paul's saying. Beware of hollow test pipes that look like cats.

Andy don't let driggs see you use the words/phrase " a little back pressure" and "good for your NT" in the same sentance.

What your saying is right about the car running better, but He'll have a whole nother argument as to why its better, and back pressure won't be used in his explanation.

haha yea ill be on the look out for the test pipe kind. ill see what my local muffler shop has to offer. i figure im gonna be turbo soon so i need to open it up anyway thanks guys!

Heh. "Back pressure?" ME KEEEEEL! RAWR!!!

LOL

You are correct, Biggunz. I will have a different explanation. As the turbo guys can often be heard telling each other, "It's all about the ball bearings these days," so should you bear in mind that, "It's all about the exhaust gas velocities, these days."

If anything, the perforated core of the catalyst serves to slow gas velocities to some extent, meaning an upgrade would be welcome, but in any car, the key to an effective exhaust system is efficient movement of the spent gasses from exhaust port to muffler tip. The reason turbo cars see such gains from cat removal/modification is due to the ability of the turbo to flow a greater volume of gasses through the system. If you increase the volume of air moving through a pipe without increasing the diameter of the pipe, you will reach a point where the pipe will begin to choke things down like a bottle neck. Increase the diameter of the pipe too far and the gasses will cool and slow in the system, resulting in a lower peak output.

Andy knows his shit. I merely posted this, my forty-seventh time explaining this concept, for the benefit for the no0bs like Paul and because mah boy, Biggunz, said I would. :D

Brian,

I understand what you're getting at and just used a generic term. Perhaps I should have referred to scavenging principles instead?

No worries man!

I hear ya. I just sort of took it upon myself to champion the eradication of the backpressure myth among DSMers. We have the best cars, we ought to be the smartest tuners. :thumb:

And, Paul? That's right. I called you no0b. :D

Paul dont take it! merely mention you have two more green dots then driggs. Green dots make you smarter regardless of your actual inteligence and know how in a certain field of study.. :D

edit: and apparently i cant tell a dot from a square, because the reputation (dots) are obviously in square form.

LOL. Paul is a post whore, but he's the best kind of post whore - the super rare kind that can't get enough of sharing quality technical information. You don't find too many of them around these days. I like to think I set things in motion for nominating Paul for Wiseman back in the day. I figured, if they were going to give me the rank with my mere 0.94 posts per day, surely they should consdier Paul, who posts nearly four times as much as I do.

the question is, given my recent promotion at 2GNT, do I get still get to be a Wiseman over here? :sneaky:

Word. I'm all about what's best for the guys with the 2G NT DSMs. Still, much love for the entire family. My rally car is 4G63-powered. Well, it will be as soon as I get around to putting the engine together. :p
