Ok guys so I'll be aquring six figures by next December:rocks: and I want to get an Rx7 or a supra keep my tsi as my daily and get a gsx or awd tsi for winter. Is this a good plan as far as a daily for winter in Indiana? If anyone has either a gsx or awd tsi please relay your experience. Do you spin in high boost in the winter? Also I prefer 1Gs to 2Gs unless a 6 bolt swap is done. This is not a theoretical question if you dont believe me you are more than welcome to come see my collection next December:)

I daily drive my Talon in the winter and it's a beast. If you get winter tires you'll be able to drive just about anywhere with no issues. I got hit by 3 blizzards last year and the car made it through like a champ. As with any car you have to know how to drive in the snow, but other then that they are great cars for slippery conditions.

I don't see why not, I got my GVR-4 for my beater (my tags even said beater). As far as spinning tires in high boost, when it snows and on ice yes. On dry road, I have traction. Three weeks during the east coast blizzard I make it around with all weather tires in over a foot of snow.

I bought my GSX specifically for winter, but wound up loving it more.. I have some bad all seasons on there but I still never really slide unless I try to. Plus it is an auto so I have less control. I would say do it.

I did have a snow bank rip my bumper clean off but that was icy. Nothing you can do about ice!

there are definitely better cars to drive in the winter, but yes they are great in the snow if you have good tires.

edit: just make sure you keep up on the maintenance, no one wants to get stranded in the winter.

I have a 2g gsx. I also bad tires. I dont drive too fast in the winter, but atleast my car seem to drive just fine. Here in MN, we had many snow storms. haha
Like one person said, if it had winter tires I can go anywhere.

I drive mine in the daily and in the snow.
As long as you have some meat on your tires its fine. The cars only as good as the tires its on and the driver behind the wheel.

Ok thx guys ik there are better vehicles for winter but im dsm for life:hellyeah: I enjoy waxing everyone in my 1G because to the ignorant its just another old talon:nono: Also I can drive in snow pretty well I currently drive a rwd truck all winter and am yet to have any accidents.

I drive mine in the winter also, and i love it! goes through anything, and it fun to screw around in.. i've got 2 year old blizzaks on it.. in the winter i turn the boost down to 18 from 32, and back the limiter from 8k to 7k so i can hammer on it and not worry.. at 32 psi it was a joke, but 18 is fairly controllable.

YouTube - snow drifing a dsm

There is no better car for winter, mine will go through more snow than my 4x4 truck.
Here is a video I have posted on You Tube of my brother snow drifting his on all seasons.
We later discussed getting winter tires for it to do higher speed drifting.
Also there was not enough resistance to spool his turbo to its efficiency, but he has a 60 trim on this thing.
A stock turbo or much smaller evo 16g will spool up just fine doing this.

With a set of 4 wheel studded tires these cars are almost unstoppable in the snow.

Oh ya I vote for getting a supra mkiv, I just got one before winter and they are freakin awesome.
Not to mention they are better on fuel, more reliable and respond to mods better than an rx7.
Oh unless you plan to do a 2j swap on your rx7, that is a project of mine right now, it should be pretty sweet when its done.

I dd my AWD daily year round - sun/rain/ice/snow, whatever Indiana decides to do that day. I have some decent Michelin all seasons that came on the car when I bought it and it handles fine in the snow. However, the lack of a LSD does make for some annoyance when trying to have fun in the snow. The addition of ABS is nice though.

Damn man excellent drifting I like how you can hold your difts unlike most people LOL. I got a 60 trim on my tsi, but if i get a gsx i will probably get a 16g or something. As for the rx7 vs supra, the rx would have a 20B and the supra a 2jz with a single turbo. I am currently more inclined to go with the supra, just more rare. As for sensible driving I am always cautious in the snow, last winter I drove a mustang from kentucky to indiana with. 5.0 bored .30 over.

Hahah nice day to try out this theory in indianLOL. Also nice 1G as stated before I will take a 1G in good shape over a 2G any day.

Good enough for me minnesota is NOTORIOUS for snow LOL

I don't believe the rx7 ever came with a 20b, they are all 13b's unless u are looking at one that some one did a 20b swap to. 20b rx7 would be more rare than a supra, except for the fact that it is still an rx7, still though they are nice looking cars.

Ik this LOL. 20Bs are sick tho, I would either do the swap myself or find a built one. As you stated tho its still an RX, which I love but the supra"s asthetic beauty both looks and speed is so very appealing LOL.

I have a 91 gsx and I rock studded snow tires in the winter. I am usually passing suv on the highway on my way to work in the snow. I dont mess around in my car in the snow but my complex has a big down hill entrance and exit. the first day I put my snow tires on I was coming out of my complex and a jeep cherokee couldnt stop at the road and ended up stuck on the other side. as I came down I started to slide when i got within 6 feet of hitting him I put it in first turned the wheel and hit it and my gsx pulled me right out of what could have been my whole front end. it had been dumping snow for days as well.

My 96 Awd goes like a dream in the snow. You can break the car loose but its still very under control!

Too scared of rust, my DSM is garaged winters. I drive my Jeep, almost exclusively in RWD, in winter.

Yeah thats why I dont drive my tsi in the winter but honestly if you periodically wash the car very throughly its not that big of a deal.

I just picked up a '95 AWD Talon a couple weeks ago to use as a DD. So far, I'm loving it. We get some pretty nasty lake affect snow storms coming off of Lake Michigan, so AWD is definitely coming in handy. No more getting stuck in the driveway with FWD like I used to. :thumb:

I personally wouldn't drive a really nice DSM in the winter. Steel corrosion sucks. And naturally in the winter, there's far more of a chance that the "other guy" could lose control of his car and hit you. Without collision insurance, I just wouldn't trust losing/damaging a really nice and clean car in the winter. To each his own though.

Its AWD, why would you have issues.

Best boost controller is your foot and gas pedal as once said.

Good Luck with the new position/job salary increase or whatever!

I live in durango colorado. we dont salt our roads. We dont do much but plow. Plus my car isnt that nice so I dont mind driving it in the winter. I am looking for a nice clean 1g shell to stuff all these good parts I have in. My car was hit in the summer..TWICE!!! both the quarters soooooo I stopped building my car until I find a nice shell or good project.
