Dont mean to start another GST vs. GSX argument.. but I have a question to ask... Now I know that the GST will have the advantage off a roll during a highway race, or can pull at higher speeds... but my question is this...

How much of a difference are we talking here? I own a GST, and I admit... I love the pull I have when doing it off a highway roll.. but I just simply hate the fact that I burn all of 1st and some of 2nd when launching. Thus, I plan on switching to a GSX in the future (like most GST owners do)... but how much of a difference is it really when highway racing?

Huge? Minimal? Not noticeable with the right MODS?

Someone who knows care to explain?

Thanks :thumb:

(btw - I searched but found nothing.. if this has been answered, someone link me... ;) , thanks in advance)

i had a 98 gst with good amount of supporting mods..

i LOVED the pull at top end. in the highway..id feel like im god..goin against camaros or mustangs and i pull on them..seeing the look on their face is priceless...its great!

but i went for the roadrace path and not much fwd turbos will win races..

so i went to awd..i recently bought a 97 gsx and im puttin it all together now..it will be done shortly...i gave it a test drive and i feel in love with it..even wen it was stock..

AWD rules..its the way to go..if u want everything..launches..drag..roadrace..and even if u set ur car up right..u can handle in the highway too..

A while back when i had my spyder i raced a gsx on the highway and i walked on him. i smoked him real bad. i was stock with only a k&n. he had intake and exhaust. gst are are way better on the highway but thats about it. gsx got him on everything else.

Hey guys...I am fairly new to this site and to the whole 4G63 arena. I owned a 95 Talon Tsi FWD for about a year. I had a few mods...K&N, hard pipe kit, exhaust and boosting about 16-18psi. I could never launch that thing. It spun the tires until 3rd gear. I realize that is mostly driver but when I hit the gas I want to go. Now I own a 1G Eclipse GSX (which is currently down - needs valve job) In my opinion, the GSX with 116k miles and an engine that smoked like a chimney pulled harder than the Talon. In fact it pulls harder off the line (duh) and also on the highway. Not sure why? The GSX is all stock/stock boost. Like some of you guys, I did not have to drive the AWD long to know this was the car for me. I realize the FWD's are lighter and maybe have a slight advantage on the highway, but that is becoming too dangerous. It's what it can do at the track that matters to me. So a WS6 can take me on the highway where we'd be endangering our lives and the lives of others...but if I can take him at the track I'd consider myself the winner. Sorry if I am off topic here.

a 1g will feel faster then a 2g simply cuz of the better intake manifold, Throttle body, and 14b turbo. They sacraficed engine for body style on the 2G. My 1g awd is faster in the 1/4mile then my 2g gst, but the gst feels much faster only because its lighter...great commuting car to smoke most on the street hehe.

FWIW I ran my friends 95 tsi awd yesterday. He has a TRE ported 18g with a 15 degree clip, fmic, 625 injectors, and dsmlink toboot. I have a Ported FP Big28, fmic, 550's and a s-afc. I'm very untuned. I don't even have a pocketlogger as of yet, which is on my list next. We were both running 20psi on pump gas. We did three different runs, two of the runs were from a 3rd gear roll, and one of the runs were from a 4th gear roll. I would pull him 2 car lengths everytime, although he can "KILL" me from a dead stop. I figured he would atleast be even with me since he has a larger turbo and him being extremely well tuned, but it didn't happen that way. I also pulled on a friends modded 240sx with a jdm turbo motor swap. He had supporting mods, and of course the t-28 that comes stock on those motors. He was running about 19psi. I pulled him by about 1.5 car lengths. Anyways... I had a good day yesterday to be very untuned. Peace!!

that is one thing I HATE about my GSX...the 5th gear feels waaaaay too short. I mean I don't like pushing my engine to 4k everytime I'm on the highway (which is everyday for school) just to go 85. I wish that 5th (And only 5th...the rest are fine) was a whole lot taller.

I'm partial to front wheel drives myself.

They just feel so much lighter, even just

The gear ratios are taller, also. Just let the turbo do the work.

Want traction?

LSD, motor mounts, good tires, aftermarket suspension, dual stage boost controller...You'll hook up almost as well as RWD cars.

Besides, just get everyone to race from 2nd gear on up. Click over to high boost, you hear that turbo scream, the tires break loose for a second, and you're gone like donkey kong.

When you get to the track you can run slicks but just hope you don't break anything, if you're making a ton of power.

the awd tranny is a pain in the ass. but mine still pulls like a bi*** at 100. the whole thing is if you have the right mods you should be fine. you'll have to compensate for drivetrain loss. if you're serious about going from a roll yu should look into getting some sort of lightweight driveshaft.

it is most likely that the motor swap was a SR20DET? they had t25's..

Like said before, when you start putting down some serious hp in an AWD, the drivetrain loss factor really starts to fade away. I used to feel my drivetrain loss major, but since my FMIC install, upped boost, and a few other goodies, tweeks, and turns, Im pulling like a raped ape in 3rd and 4th on the freeway. There are always ways to compensate. Shep doesnt hit 160mph plus in the quarter because of a shitty launch right? ;)

Well said...i like my awd so far.

It sounds to me like you really enjoy pulling hard on the highway. If so, keep your GS-T, and do some suspension upgradres on it. The GSX is wonderful (I love AWD), but I can definitely see the advantage to pulling hard on the highway. Get yourself some nice wide wheels and sticky tires and an LSD. You will be able to launch pretty decent for a FWD car with that setup. Much easier than trading in your GST and finding a good AWD.

If you like running through the twisties even more than highway pulls, then GSX is the way to go. The GSX is a little heavier, but you can just stomp the gas on the way out of a turn and really feel it and hook up. Also, driving in the rain becomes a thing of beauty.

If you plan on upgrading the turbo, then the GSX will still pull pretty good through 3rd gear. I have a FP Big28, and it doesn't run out of steam till 4th gear.
