ok i have a 95 tsi awd i picked this car up cheap because it didnt have 1st gear so i knew eventually i was going to have problems just not this soon. ok well my question is what all do i need to do to put a gst trans in? i know everyone frowns upon this and i cant find any solid answers on what to do other then dont do it its just a temporary fix this is my only dd at the moment and i dont have 500 to 1000 dollars to buy another awd trans right now so i bought a gst trans, axles, flywheel, clutch kit, and starter for 275 is there anything else i need to do this swap? and also i keep hearing if i just drop the driveshaft that it will mess up my rear anyone have that problem? i dont want to mess anything up that will stop me from making it awd then thanks for any help

Doesn't the FWD have a one-piece driver's side axle, instead of an intermediate + equal-length axle?

No idea if this makes a difference, even if true. Just raising the issue so he doesn't get stuck half-way.

If you have the FWD tranny and FWD axles (yes, the driver's side axle is a long, one piece unit), just use them together. No sense in making things more complicated than they have to be.

Sounds like everything else is good to go. Tranny, axles, starter plate/starter, flywheel...I can't think of anything else. Clutch discs and pressure plates are the same between FWD and AWD.

Hey, I am in the same place as you are.

During my AWD swap I found my AWD tranny Broken (internals), and I just drop a FWD Tranny for now.

It is straight forward, It looks you have everything you need for the swap, Just don't forget the FWD Starter Plate, and I would suggest to replace your Axle seals, now that your tranny is out.

Good Luck with your swap.

thanks everyone! I really appreciate it.

Although it appears you are on the right track with what YOU want to do, I keep asking myself WHY??? Just because of a transmission? How much time and money are you spending on doing a complete swap from AWD to FWD? I would rather scour the earth to find a tranny on the cheap, than to do the sacrilege you are attempting.

i know i really dont want to go fwd but a buddy is selling me everything cheap to do it and im in a really tight situation right now and need something. i been looking all over for a cheap awd tranny since i got the car. cant find anything less then 600 with out transfer case

oh and im spending 250 for everything :hellyeah:

yea i dont have 1st 4th or 5th. its internally i heard every gear blow apart haha and i love to find a gsx trans for that price!! there isnt anything around this area or a reasonable drive thats under 600 and like i said before im not in the better side of extra cash right now. also, like i said before this is not a permenant solution, i love the awd too much to give it up for fwd, i plan to keep my awd drivetrain to swap everything back

I understand exactly what u mean, these bastards always break down at the precise moment when you can't afford for anything to do so. Regardless, I would look and then I would KEEP looking until you find the tranny. I would also recommend getting a ton of estimates on a rebuild (much better option btw) ask fellow DSMers in your area, try craigslist for partouts, ebay the tranny, look on here in the classifieds, go to every junkyard in your area until you find it. I heard this a while back and it stays true time and time again.. "Persistance Pays" good luck :thumb:
