I have a loose ground wire right below where my air filter goes. Its attached to the body of the car, but its just hanging there. the other side is not attach to anything. I think it suppose to be grounded unto the transmission, cause i just had a clutch install by a friend and he took the transmission off and i guess he forgot to attach it back on. so I could just attach it anywhere on the engine or transmission or does it have to be on a certain spot. And would that cause any affect if it stays how it it (loose, not attach to anything)

Ground it anyware on the engine. You will find a spot on the intake manifold. Anywere you can bolt it to the engine your good to go.

While you're at it, just build yourself several gounding straps of assorted length. Theres a few threads about where and how to ground out your entire motor. The more, the better. You can even take a meter, put between the ground strap and a ground point on the firewall and read current.

[ ....but it was when i took one of those ground wires and actually added it on to the alternator power back to the batter was when the car came to life power wise and all kinds of brightness in lights and sound!! :thumb: :dsm:

Anyone who has this kit or would just wanna run a stronger power wire might wanna try this, I'm out![/QUOTE]

Did you use an inline fuse with that circuit-addition?

i'm about to install a grounding kit in my car only because i believe my 14 year old stock ground cables aren't doing the trick. voltage at the battery reads where it should but my interior voltage is alot lower then it should be (at times it dips as low as 10.8v under load and never goes above 12.8v with no load - brand new alternator) i'm not trying to get any power out of the ground kit, but i'm sure it will improve my car from an electrical point of view.

but i'll keep you guys posted after i install the new ground wires...

i built my kit from scratch...i found that spending 30 bucks for a making a kit was more feasable than spending a 100 when i cant really spend much on my car....i notice the car ran smoother and maybe gained a few hp's but i dought it ...i wanted it more for the better grounds nad better electrical than performance...plus the red cover looks good under the hoood too...bling bling (hehe)

Good Morning,
Is anyone familiar with the half inch wide, flat chrome/mesh looking ground that runs from just above and behind the intake to the firewall?. Mines 9/10's of the way torn through. Just wondering if it holds any "Real" importance, another words, should it be something I need to run to the store and get a replacement for ASAP....
Just seems like another ground to me, not saying that it doesn't hold some type of value, but minimal at best.... ??? :dsm:  :dsm:

Okay, I went and checked my car and if its what I think you are talking about (its hard to tell because my motor is out) it is to keep the intake manifold/cylinder/fuel rail head at the same electrical potential. With alot of fuel going in that area I (as an electrician) say its pretty important. The likelyhood of charging the rail and blowing something up are low to never, but the whole frame develops a static electrical charge just from moving through the air. You ever get shocked by your door? Its from bad grounding.

You should replace it, but if your cheap, go to radio shack, buy a mechanical splice, cut the wire where its broken, clean it up, and splice it back together. Lemme know how it goes and if I can help any more.

Ryan

Thanks Ryan,
That sounds like the one, and yes as a matter of fact I get shocked by my door EVERY DAY !!! ROFL ROFL ROFL ROFL
I always attributed it to the two amps I have stashed under the seats :coy:
Now it all makes sense.....So those grounds they sell as seen here ----> http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/89-0...011813772QQcategoryZ33574QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Aren't as big of a scam as I thought... Things that make you go hmmmmmm WTF WTF Don't I feel like a Gidget.... :coy:

By the way, how's the weather over there?. I was stationed in Bremerton, Wa for nine years... When it's nice there (not raining) it's a beautiful place.. I was going to go back there from here (Sigonella, Sicily) but got orders to Syracuse, NY... Hence I can't run to Radio Schack :rocks: :rocks: Can do in May though !!!! God bless America !!!! :D

Yeah, not bad deal. Bad grounds shock drivers ever day. Ive been shocked so many times in my career that Im still scared of peoples doors. ROFL ROFL

Go with that $9.95 bubba and pop it on. I cant guarantee you wont get shocked anymore, like I said, the whole vehicle needs to be at the same potential, which is why the amps have to be grounded to the chassis, etc. Otherwise, excess static will bite you

Weather here is great for NASWI. Cloudy, windy, but no rain. Whats yer rate?

Lemme know how it goes, hope I helped

dam i need to re-ground my stang then, i get shocked all the ####ing time. everyone says its cause of the lack of floormats(i hate those little ####ers). good thing i have craploads of 4ga wiring leftover from numerous stereo installs.

Cars and Static Electricity work the same way as aircraft. However, getting zapped by an aircraft canopy with static on it can blow you as far as 10 feet.

The resistance of the air hitting the frame during movement excites the frame so to speak and builds up static electricity, on a car its just an "oww damnit" Now this isnt the definitave bottom line reason the car shocks you. But improper grounding IS one of them. If you hual tail and everything isnt at the same potential, the voltage acumulates and waits for something (your hand) to give it a ground. And when you touch the door frame with a foot in the GROUND, you get a zap because you allowed it to discharge through you.

But... if you hold the frame as you step out onto the ground, you wont get zapped. Theres your fix if you dont wanna fix it. Ive even had a problem where the car wouldnt get me because I'd kick the door closed, but the doorhandle at the 7-11 would, because I was charged and it wasnt. Cant win for losin.

I take it you must work there considering you used (NASWI), judging from your posts you must be, or were an ABH or AD/AE maybe an AM ??
I'm an HM almost done serving my three year sentence over here at Naval Hospital Sigonella.... I actually enlisted in Silverdale, so I'm from WA, but after being over here for three years I just don't think I can go back to the rain, so I picked orders to the MEPS station in Syracuse NY. Basically traded in the rain for Snow, 113" annually !!! WTF OMG WTF
I want my wife to experience the four seasons and alot of snow, as you know there are only two seasons in WA, Fall and 7 weeks of Summer, that way when I get done with my 20 we should have a good idea of where we'd like to go, PNW or NE....

Sorry peeps, damn firewall over here is getting on my nerves... Patience with the little buttons and motionless screen............ :sosad: :sosad: :spam:

Doin the full 20? Me too. Cant wait to re-up, gloss black paint coming. Feel free to PM or email on the Navy BS. Ill shoot it with ya. I think Im going to bed now. Got work @ 1530. Lemme know how that ground wire thing goes fer ya. Gotta be back @ work at 1500 and its 0331 right now. Hey, grab a boot of beer for me. I think Sig is great. Rhodes Greece is WAY cooler though, on a novelty aspect. Shoot me a PM sometime.

Late, fair winds and following seas. Safe trip to Syracuse, overseas moves via the Nav aint no joke from what I hear.

Need to stay on topic, which Is why I said PM me, an will continue off thread, slowly but surely, plenty of time for shop talk elsewhere. :thumb:

Gone a bit off track on this earth strap issue! just fix the earth strap its more for you guages, headlight and all the other electrical bits in your car that require earthing to work properly.
Then change what type of clothes and runners you are wearing if you want the static discharge problems to go away! TO much nylon!

LOL Darn squids whoring up the thread! Go out with your local 0481's on an HST and hit that 200,000 volts from a super stallion.

Seriously grounding stuff is awesome. Someone had a video of how much static electricity is jumping around an engine bay. They did it at SEMA one year.

I just swapped out my intake manifold with another OEM mani that I ported.

On the back fire wall behind the IM is a ground wire with a yellow stripe. I can't remember where it connects to the IM.

I think it goes on one of the throtle cable bolts but not sure.

Can anyone help?

how important is the ground wire that was attached to my stock downpipe because an idiot friend of mine cut it when trying to remove the downpipe and now car has wierd electrical problems....my dash and headlights are dim for about a minute or 2 when i first start the car now and then brighten to normal...could this be the ground that is disconnected?
