i have a 1996 Rs eclipse 420a i just had my clutch changed and i changed my oil. i went to autozone told them what car i had and they gave me SAE 85w 140 Gear oil

my car now grinds gear real bad on high RPM's if i shift in low RPMS no grinds

i did research i saw some threads that the oil will kill my tranny

so at the moment im scared to drive my car

what tranny oil do i need to get? any help ?

kind of confused because i thought my tranny is done

I think it calls for ATF-4. Im currently running 80/90 in my trans and its shifting smooth. I would get that oil out of your trans, its way to thick.

oh thought so about the thick oil ... so what should i get for tranny oil? like a brand name or something just to get me out of this confused stage

When i changed my fluid i used the castrol import mix. It has it listed on the back of the container that it is equivalent to what came stock. Also check and see if you put enough in. I know if you don't have enough in it will also grind like that.

The transmission needs a special oil from either the dodge or mitsubishi dealership.

I do believe it is called NV-T350. Any other oil will kill your synchros. I think you can also use chrysler ATF +4.

this is what i kept reading when i did my research

so to the dealer i must go or is there something from autozone i can use? if someone who has a 420a please let me know thanks

Yes I think so too cause when I had my NA Talon I did my clutch and went down chrysler to get my tranny fluid. So yes I wouldnt recomend any other fluids. but I think you are right, I think its called ATF +4 for chrysler transmissions.

If I was u yes I would just go to the Chrysler dealer and use that mopar ATF tranny fluid, I used it and my tranny shiftted nice and smooth:)

well im going to the dealer tomorrow.. i was running that oil for like 2 weeks or so and when my oil ran out for the Clutch and refill it thats when the grinding started happening.. hopefully my tranny didnt screw up >.<

it only grinds 1,2 sometimes third ... fourth n fifth go in no problem

yeah that should do the job, check for leaks too;)... hopefully u didnt ruin your syncros or anything

What? You can run Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) in a manual)? How is that? I asked that and everyone said no.

Im not sure of what the bottle said when I got mine.. it might of not said ATF I cant remember, but when I got the fluid it didnt seem like gear oil at all. I was shocked:confused:... all I remember is getting these black 1qt bottles with blue saying Mopar and something about chrysler trannys... I wish I had one laying around

I did a research on what type of fluid a 95 non-turbo 5speed Talon used and this is what came up.
Non-Turbo: MOPAR MS9417 MTX Fluid P/N 4773167

Well guys i changed the oil but i still grind. Not as bad as i use too but still grinds in 2nd 3rd 4th which is no good. i got the NVT 350 trans axle fluid mopar

so i had to buy a trans >.< got one for 300$ with 5 month warranty

Guys put the right stuff into your trans because it will indeed mess it up

I would like some insight on this as well. I recently flushed my trans with the factory mopar stuff... (on an 1995 Eclipse GS, 420A) ........but paying 22bucks a quart? My Honda Integra R's out of the factory from Acura (for the USDM ITR's) is the same at 7.60 a quart....I now run 75-90 royal purple in my ITR's trans, and it's amazing. Is the economy really hurting in the USDM car market to jack the trans oil up? Is there ANYONE out there running royal purple or anything aftermarket trans oil in the 420A's, I noticed all the replys to what they are using aftermarket wise, have 4g63 drivetrains and the OP is a 96 N/T, just curious. Seeing as how Kimo ran 85-140.... I wouldnt think 75-90 would be NEAR as bad as a 85-140. I'm open too all opinions or insight, my main reason for all of this is my buddy has blown 3 of these 420A trannys, and EVERY time it's a spyder gear with a shaft piece that has been sheared in half, and of course a blown transmission casing...using factory mopar fluid, on a bone stock 420A drivetrain, all within 2 months, and to me, that's junk.........I never have blown a trans and I drive mine like I stole it, a mechanic friend calls it the 10grand slams that blow our trannys... i dont launch at high rpms, more like around 3...MAYBE 4... Anyways, thanks for the link on the gear oils, looking over it now.

I have never run any ATF that they say neons do.

Ok, so I'm understanding this, I know you DO NOT substitute gear oil with motor oil. What I'd like to know is if I'm reading the chart right? MINUS the additives, the Gear oil weight such as 75-90w is comparable mostly to a 10-40 motor oil. After doing many oil changes and trans flushes...It almost seems exactly like motor oil (the MOPAR gear oil compared to basic motor oil) I've run thick trans oils in trucks and what not, so I know a comparable difference in viscosity. What I'm getting at is, has anyone ran 75-90 Redline, Royal Purple, or Castrol gear oil in their factory 420A? (5speed of course)

Here's the chart I was looking at:
VISCOSITY INDEX CHART

Thanks for any input all. Have a great one!
