So my wife and I went today and put the money down on that 1996 GSX!!! Picking it up on tuesday, we can't wait. It has an open BOV and I know no matter how cool it is it has to go...the only other performance mods are new filter and a mbc. I need to do all the maintanance first, is there anything more important then the rest? The car has 116K miles and is the one with a leaking valve cover, he says sometimes there is oil up by the plugs, but he has a full gasket set. And I also wanted to take the chance to thank everyone again in helping in our DSM descision!!! This comunity rocks and we can't wait to get into our new car.

LOL my first DSM, First turbo car, FIRST IMPORT of any kind!! I've done the ThunderBird Super Coupe and Grand Prix GTP Comp G thing. But now I am ready to go fast ;-)

I like this guy already! :)

One thing you mentioned that caught my eye, you said that you were thinking of replacing the boost gauge that is currently in there and possibly adding an EGT, and an A/F guage. I hope you're thinking of a Wideband O2 gauge when you say an "A/F gauge." Obviously though, before you spend any money on gauges, you should do as stated earlier... T-belt, water pump, PCV valve (do a search for the "stupid PCV valve" thread) and fluids. Do a Boost Leak test as well and you'll be on the right track.

congrats on the purchase man, just do your maintainance first. Post up some pics so we can see the ride once you get it.

Congrats on the purchase. You can easily find a new or used vc on ebay for around $60. I got my "jdm" valve cover for a friend for $20 and i sprayed it flat black, killer deal and look :rocks: Also replace the whole gasket set new with new pcv valve and oil cap like i did. I have 0 oil leaks on my dsm :D

amen to that!!!! 7 months without any oil and water leaks. Never had added oil or water before to my DSM.

Ohh and it does have a boost gauge in in a dual pod, ###### gonna replace it with a triple with a better boost, an A/F, and EGT? not sure about that third choice. I'd really like to do nitrous because I never have so a pressure gauge maybe.

An egt pyrometer gauge is one that would be needed but no point to buy an afr gauge unless you enjoy a light show. I would pass on the nitrous :thumb:

The 2g GSX is a great choice. I think it was a good deal for $2,900. It may have some minor issues but that shouldn't be too hard fix. With 116K miles, it's time for some maintanance anyway. As long as you are satisfied with it, that's all that matters. Goodluck.

Congrats on the purchase!

First this first. Mantainance. T-belt, BS belt, Waterpump, Pulleys, Hydrulic tensioner. SBR and Extremepsi both have good prices on OEM parts. VC gasket, spark plug gomments, 1/2moon seal, and oil cap seal will fix all the leaks up top. Plugs (NGK bpr6es) and wires.

Disassemble all IC piping and Intercooler and clean it (bet its full of oil). Get your car to run right first before you try to run fast. You'll be amazed at how hard a DSM will pull when it's running right.

All my friends tell me that my car with a 16G pulls harder than any other 16G they've been in.

Correct.

If you want to go with three gauges, I would suggest Boost, Wideband, and EGT or Oil pressure gauge. They do bring a oil pressure gauge in the dash, but I dont trust it.

Yeah wide band is the only way to go, I know that from my GTP. Well off to work then to get the car tonight, so hopefully next time I post it'll be right after I get outta my new DSM!!!

Like pretty much everyone has said you need to focus on everything BUT horsepower right now. Replace everything that is worn, then when your engine is good and ready you can start to focus on doing a few mods, only dont focus on stuff like bigger turbos and a huge exhaust. Start out with stuff like hard piping, a frontmount, and of course a better BOV (I've got an extra 1g one that is in perfect shape if your interested):sneaky:. I would stay away from the nitrous unless you plan on making your car track only. If you have money to blow, attack the internals (rods, pistons, crank, valves, springs, etc.), then you can focus on bigger turbos and all that fun stuff.

thats a good approach. Also some people like to get mods, and more mods, expecting to see improvements. Most mods do show improvements. But try to work with what you have first and get it running right with what you have done. Meaning once you get a few bolt ons. Isntead of trying to get injectors and up the boost, just leave it at where it is and tune it. AFC's work great and can be tuned easily in the streets with just a wideband. Of course if you can get a dyno, and a datalogger that would be ditto. Also there are better things to use than AFC's, but i'm just throwing in the most user friendly and simple device. DSM Links work wonders though.

Just use what you have to its fullest advantage before going crazy modding. It gets to the point where you mod and you don't really see any improvement, trust me I can tell you from previous expirements.
