Hey everyone I just got back from the Sacramento Raceway with my 97 GSX. This was my first time out with this car, it was so crowded I left after my second run. I need some help on my traps, and what times I should be running. My clutch cant hold my power even when I dropped the clutch it wouldnt grab immidiately. My mods are 14b@16-17 psi on 100 octane, K&N intake, 3 inch apexi turbo back with cat, rewired 190 walbro, greddy type rs bov, ngk plugs and accel 8 mm wires. Here are the only time slips i got:
1st run:
60': 2.146
I2: 6.228
I3: 9.645
MPH: 72.123
ET: 14.991
MPH: 91.316

Last run:
60': 2.144
I2: 6.182
I3: 9.576
MPH: 72.897

ET: 14.920
MPH: 91.267

I know these are horrible times and especially the 60' times, but can anyone help me on telling me if my traps seems right or maybe I am getting knock causing my traps to be low. I thought I would see 13s. Thanks for the help.

With that kind of trap, it should be good for mid 14s at least. I also see you don't have anything to tune the car with and without a logger there is no way to tell what's going on.

The key to going fast down the 1320 is good tuning and good driving.

Your traps aren't an accurate representation of the car's potential since the clutch is slipping off the line and not holding the power. Launching an AWD is a fine art and there's a fine line between a slip and a bog. As an example, if you improved your 60' times to a very reasonable 1.85, you'd pick up between almost half a second at the long end of the track. Your traps wouldn't improve much, but you'd certainly run the 1/4 much more quickly. The 60' is key to setting up a good run.

Either adjust the clutch down and see if she'll hold, or look into an upgrade if you plan on racing.

Good luck,

Andy

Thanks for the help, I will adjust my clutch and see how it does. After I left the raceway I did a few launches around 4k rpm and the clutch held better but anything after that It wouldnt grab hard. I am gonna invest in a ACT 2600 soon. I thought I would have trapped higher because of the mods I have, I have heard of close to stock dsm's pulling high 13s. I guess practice makes perfect because I pulled 2.1 60' times in my old GST haha.

Launching an AWD is a matter of feel. The 2600 will be a little less forgiving than a 2100 would, but if you plan to add some fairly serious mods and launch repeatedly it's the right choice for you.

Keep in mind that the stocker or the 2100 needs plenty of cool down in between sessions so don't burn up your existing clutch with any back to back launches. The adjustment should help, but a new clutch would be even better.

Good luck!

Andy

i plan to get my car into the 12s when i am finished with it, and i think the 2600 is a good choice. Thanks for the help.

I ran a 13.6@100 3 years ago with the same mods as you but with a 2600. I was running 18 psi and pump gas.
You sure you weren't just spinning out of the hole? Awd does not guarantee traction :)

Yeah 13.6 sounds right, you are my inspiration haha. I might go back out tomorrow and hopefully get a few more runs in. I adjusted my clutch and it grabs a lot better. I will try 18 psi on 100 octane if i do go back out. By the way on your 13.6 run what rpm were you launching and shifting at? Any help is great, thanks.

Zach

I always launch between 4 and 5000 rpms. I shift when i feel the car doesn't pull anymore. First gear is usually alot higher than the others since it shoots up as soon as you get going.
On stock cams, the power starts going down around 6500ish.
The 13.6 was MY FIRST TIME EVER drag racing ANY car at the track so i was really happy. And it was soo packed that i only got one run so i was REALLY happy i got a decent time. Never went back to the track on the 14b tho.

I STILL have the timeslip even though it was 2-3 years ago (the first time is always special). Here's the breakdown:

60': 1.950
I2: 5.695
I3: 8.765
MPH: 81.25
ET: 13.628
MPH: 100.82

Oh yea, i dynoed at 239 awhp a week or 2 before that run.

Thats really good for your first time, nothing like hitting 13s. I had a 1990 Nissan 300zx TT it was basically stock and I pulled a 13.6@105 mph with a 2.1 60' time that was a blast. Well I will practice on my launching, and raise the boost to 18 and see how it does next time I go out to the track. Thanks for the help.
