I know that if you drive a TSI hard and pull over and look at the turbo at night it will be glowing red and that is normal.

but...

If you are driving a TSI grandma style and pull over and look under the hood DURING THE DAY and the turbo is glowing red is that a bad thing?

If so what possibly could be wrong with it?

actually a lean mixture burns hotter! And the glowing is normal, but at a too bright is not right
Both of you are right. Too rich or too lean will affect EGTs.

my exhaust mani turned orange when mine blew up, i thought it was awsome, i was like "WTF, did you do to my car, oh well thats hot"

I thought rich fuel mixtures burn colder?!?

Rich fuel mixtures do burn colder. All Kris said was that EGT's were affected by the a/f mix and nothing about richer fuel mixtures not burning colder...

if you're running too rich, you're not burning all of your fuel droplets in the combustion chamber. rich means lower combustion chamber temps because of this, but higher egts, because those fuel droplets are going to end up combusting in your exhaust manifold/turbine housing.
running too lean will likewise result in high egts for a different reason, but also high combustion chamber temps.

I don't see that happening. If the fuel vapors, when compressed into a teeni-tiny area and then sparked, don't ignite. AND the egts will remain colder, and the engine plus exhaust will remain colder AND introduced into an exhaust system where the temps are lower then the combustion chamber..... then how would that make them ignite?

sorry if thats hard to understand.

Ok, I did a compression test

The numbers were

Cyn 1- 185
Cyn 2- 180
Cyn 3- 170
Cyn 4- 180

Now here’s the question, when I did it on cyn 1, I herd this weird ass BEEP BEEEP, when the motor cranked over...it was loud and weird...THE WEIRDEST THING, on that cylinder, that Flanges pipe connected to that cylinder, glows red after revving for a while, and only that Flanges...

wtf is up with it!?

if somthing internal was wrong wouldent the compression be all fu*cked up?

so what is it?

This just started happening the other night when i got home from work, I popped the hood just to make sure my dipstick didnt pop up a little. It has a tendency to do that once and a while. Well anyway i was looking at my turbo and on the exhaust side it was glowing a light red. Is this normal or is there something wrong? It just seemed really hot and it has never done that before. HELP!

the other day after i got done running my car kinda hard and then letting it cool down for a min or 2 idleing i kinda smelt something hot under the hood.. i looked and my manifold was glowing. all i have done so far is an intake, some free mods and vented the blow off valve for some sound. just got the car a week ago.. is this normal after some hard driving or is it running too lean causing a heat problem? also after a day or 2 enough coolant leaks out to drain the reserve tank. is this a warped or cracked head or blown head gasket? or something else.. there are no leaks that i can see... thx

The glowing mani is normal after a hard, long run. Make sure you let it cool for a good amount of time before you shut it off. I wont even touch the venting thing. The using of coolant could come from alot of places. Clean the engine and see if there are any leaks and if not then it could be a warped head or the gasket. Check the oil and see if it looks like a chocolate shake. If it does then you have coolant in the water.

If you're leaking that much coolant, you should check your waterpump. I had a horrible coolant leak, and that was the culprit.
