I know that if you drive a TSI hard and pull over and look at the turbo at night it will be glowing red and that is normal.

but...

If you are driving a TSI grandma style and pull over and look under the hood DURING THE DAY and the turbo is glowing red is that a bad thing?

If so what possibly could be wrong with it?

The car: 91 gsx with free mods new thermostat, new auto tensioner, new coolant fluid.

The Problem: Under acceleration there is lacked power all through the rpm range and when i am under normal driving the temp gauge reads directly strait up not just to the left like it should. then when i stop the car and pop the hood after a drive the exhaust manifold is red hot.

Checked: I checked my spark plugs they are correct base idle is correct as well at base timing. i have a hole in my cat as well. all vacuum hoses are good and there are no leaks except for the oil which is normal for a car with 145000 using synthetic.

Any help would be greatly appriciated!

-My turbo does also glow after some boosting, how old is your turbo? the waste gate area might be worn allowing exh gas to pass through.

My turbo is the stock one that came with the car. How would i fix the wastegate? would i have to buy a new new turbo or what? I was possibly thinking that the problem was a faulty cat creating a blockage? any other advice would be great and appriciated!

-To check the waste gate, the only way that I know of is to remove the O2 sensor housing and look into the turbo. this page Tom talk about upgrading the waste gate, I post it so you know what're you looking for, when I swap out my 14B(OEM) turbo, the waste gate area around the round flap were either melted away or cracked, so the condition is depend on how the turbo was treaded, but your problem might be at the cat like you said, drive around with the cat remove(loud) and see what happen.

Although I think you may have timing issues, it's routine for turbos and exhaust manifolds to glow. This is an extreme example, but not damaging [heat shields are a _good_ thing]:

I suspected maybe timing issues too but The timing is correct. thats what getts me is that it lacks power and the manifod glows but not the turbo i am going to take the cat off tomorrw after work and check that route and if that isnt the case then i will check my wastegate and dig into that..fun stuff ahead

I have a 92 GSX. ALl my timing etc...is just fine. No codes, nothing wrong. My exhaust manifold glows after normal usage also, like Defiant said, its typical. Don't worry about it until your manifold cracks, then u gotta replace it or upgrade. And no, my turbo doesn't really glow either.

OK today i took my cat off and gazed through it and nope no blockage but of course since i had the root of all evil off i went ahead and cleared the thing out so has no chance of being blocked. Reinstalled it and bam no difference in power really feels smoother of course but did not chance my problem.
I then checked my timing and discovered something the light from the timing light.would go like normal at an even pace and then it would stutter. Also i checked out my exhaust manifold and i have at least two broken "studs" and at least one crack i can see, Would this affect anything? So if anybody knows a a good place to buy a Exhaust mantifold it would be great.
Tomorrow i will post what i got on my compression test and my ignition test if i can find the tools in my cluttered shop:) Thank you so much

On the topic of replacing your manifold.......If you want a stock one, here is my plug.....
I work for a company called 1A Auto and we sell the stock replacement manifolds with a lifetime warranty. We are all over ebay if you want to check us out.. We have over 30,000 positive feedbacks. Give us a call toll free at 888-844-3393. Ask for Jeremy if you want to talk to a fellow dsm'r.
Yes I do have one on my car......it fits awesome, performance is the same as a stock mani, just without the cracks.... :)
Good Luck

I am so glad I stumbled upon this thread; my manifold glows too and I was worried that something was terribly wrong. I am trying to figure out all of this motorhead lingo, but can someone please briefly explain the "timing issues" that I am seeing so often referred to in this thread?
Any info would be appreciated. (And please be kind to the knoob)

mine does it too.
i heard if its glowing, you should leave the car running, to circulate oil through it, so the oil doesnt burn up and sludge the bearings

So long as your cooling water is in the system, the oil in the spool can't get a lot hotter than it. You'll get some heat soak when parking, but you'll also get thermosiphon through the cooling system until it cools enough to let the thermostat re-close.

ok i drove my car the other nite and then popped the hood and the manifold, exhaust side of the turbo and o2 housing was glowing red. i just put the sbr evo3 16g and evo mani and evo o2 housing, before with the stock turbo it never did this. i do have a walbro 255 3" downpipe 3" cat back and no cat. i also just put in a crane cam stage 2 on the ex. could this be the cause or is this normal with the casting it's made of? i was also told that i could be dumping gas into the mani because of the bigger fuel pump and no fpr or fuel controller. could this be the reason?
:dsm:

Sometimes it'll do that if you drive the car hard or for a long time. My exhaust manifold glows pretty bright if I'm drag-racing or something.

Hell yeah :thumb: I've always wanted to cook something on it for some odd reason :p

ok thanks for the replies, i was just wanting to make sure that it wasn't hurting anything. cause with my 14b and stock mani and o2 housing they never did this no matter how hard i was driving it. but now with the evo3 16g and evo mani and evo o2 housing it will do it if i drive it for like 20 min. but if it is normal then ok;)

and i will have to try lighting a cig with the mani:thumb:

My oil cap is loose, so when I saw smoke coming from the engine I wasn't worried, but I took a look at the engine anyway, it was night and dark, with street lights around.

I opened the hood and saw the oil dripping on the E. manny, there was the smoke. And there was a red light on the E. Manny. So l looked/moved around to see if I can block/see where the light was coming from, I thought it was the street lights. I could feel alot of heat, when I put my face about 2 feet from the engine. I looked closer and relized the light was my E. manny.

Now I know that a lean A/F mixture causes exhaust gases to rise in temp. But I'm running stock boost on stock car with only a hacked MAS and a 3" exhaust (DP, TP, and catback), why am I running SO lean?!?

I had another problem that I posted here(click me). Are these problems related

1. Fix your oil leak.
2. My mani gets nice and glowing after spirited driving.
3. SEARCH!
4. Any logs or general info on how the car was running, or how you were driving would help.

1. Solution is on the way,
2. Really? I thought that it was a really BAD sign
3. Yahoo and google turned up nothing DSM specific,
4. The only thing I can tell you, that the car did abnormally is when I was going up a hill I downshifted from 4th to 2nd because the lane opened up into 2 lanes from one and I was passing alot of people (or tried to). As soon as I got on it, the car seemed to jutter, the exhaust sounded "poppy" and the power just wasn't there. So I immedatily put it into 3rd, then 4th. And drive softly. When I went to the post and stopped for an ID card check thats when I saw the smoke coming from the hood.
