I know that if you drive a TSI hard and pull over and look at the turbo at night it will be glowing red and that is normal.

but...

If you are driving a TSI grandma style and pull over and look under the hood DURING THE DAY and the turbo is glowing red is that a bad thing?

If so what possibly could be wrong with it?

Check your ignition timing. If your base timing is off, you will end up spewing unburnt fuel into the exhaust manifold and turbine housing which will later ignite. This will make the turbo glow brightly.

Can someone help me out, i just boosted my turbo from stock 10psi,
to 15 psi , with a boost controller, after a quick run to check it out,
the exhaust manifold is glowing red, is this normal?, maybe a stopped
up cat, or whats up, thanks for any help.

your not geting the exhaust gasses out fast enough there staying in there from stock exhaust ? more likely your cat being your cats like what 11 years old, gut it out , Gain some HP and increase flow ,if your running stock exhause make sure to up grade soon.

Glowing turbo is normal? Dude, I thought that I had killed my turbo... this is sweet!

Thank guys for the help, i was just worried, and had never seen that before, after a trip to the local performance shop, i am now running 20 psi boost with a bright red manifold LOL, car has never ran better,
and thanks again for the reply!

Um.... 20 might be a little high.

When you go to cook beans on that manifold, remember they're done before it gets all the way to glowing. Failure to do so tends to cause the can to burst..... and it's very, very ugly.

uh... so I've heard.....

cough.

The other day we wired a 2gmas, dejon intake pipe, walbro 255lph fuel pump, and 550s. Put everything together and the car ran great and hauled ass. about 20 mins of driving, the car sounded like it was spitting something out the exhaust. We got home opened the hood and the exhaust manifold and turbo hot side were literally Glowing red and I mean the whole thing not a small spot. I looked at the intake pipe and the seal around the turbo was not on well. Basically the intake was only half on. Anyway we fixed the pipe and turned the car on and in 15 miles, the car ate 3/4 of a full tank in just 15 miles. What is going on here?

I think that originally, the seal being off on the turbo told the mas there was less air in the motor than there was causing it to run lean-red glowing
but why 3/4 of a tank on the way home-possibly a wire came loose (power) on the mas-since rewired.
Finally, why the boging and bucking and a wird noise from exhaust or turbo. Could the blades in the turbo be melted? Please e-mail me at

Running real rich will also cause the turbo/manifold to glow. The only other things are retarded ignition timing or advanced cam timing, which are both unlikely on these motors.

I'd go for the running real rich option.

My manifold glows every night. Guess I should stay out of second :)

After driving 200 miles back to my college, going a average speed of 85mph and under 1bar of boost... I noticed my manifold glowing red... My t28Killer wasn't glowing though though. What causes this? It never happened before...

havent installed my egt yet, but if it reads too high could it be i'm running lean?

thanks guys for the help

I'm not a hundred percent sure but I'm guessing that it isn't something to worry about. I think it was just the long trip that did it. The reason the turbo probably wasn't red was because you didn't boost too much so the turbo wasn't dealing with a lot of hot exhaust gases like the exhaust manifold was.

If you smoke, light whatever it is you smoke off of it.....impresses chicks ;) :p
