I know that if you drive a TSI hard and pull over and look at the turbo at night it will be glowing red and that is normal.

but...

If you are driving a TSI grandma style and pull over and look under the hood DURING THE DAY and the turbo is glowing red is that a bad thing?

If so what possibly could be wrong with it?

my turbo mani is glowing red at idel. and i have a idel surge goes up and down. and i took my oil cap off and i have steam coming out bad. any help would be thankfull. also, is the o2 sensor the same on a 90 lasor as a 92 talon.

does it start glowing just from idling or do you boost hard, stop and then look at it. if it glows from just idling and steam comes out of the oil cap then you have got a very badly overheating engine that's running very lean and hot too. i would say your head gasket is probably toasted and coolant is mixing in with the oil and burning off to make steam.

if it glows after hard boost then that's normal to a certain point - it needs to be really high boost for a long period of time.

i just took the engine out of my laser to put it in the talon. the laser ran fine. the only thing that i did was pull the balance shafts, put new timing belt on evo mani/ evo 16g turbo, the engine came out of a 90 laser and i put it in a 92 talon. my idle goes up and down. and when i tap on the gas idle goes real hi then back down like its going to die. thanks for your reply. the mani turns blue not glowing red. blue like really hot!!

well i found out what the problem was with the idle. used a friends logger and it say isc is bad. and i changed the fuel filter, plugs, and put the 3" downpipe exhaust back on. and the mani is not getting real hot anymore. also i changed the maf 2 a non hacked maf. but i have a major problem with the smoke coming out of the oil cap and out the tube on the side. it seems to be getting worse the more it runs ive hade every body look at it and no one noes anything. with letting it run for about 2min oil cap off it will fill up the hole garage with smoke. thanks for any help

My turbo manifold is glowing, bright orange. I wasn't getting full boost on my way home tonight, popped the hood and WOAH, orange glowing at me. I know this can't be good. The "not full boost" has happened before, and gone away back to normal. I've never popped the hood at night to check it out though. Coulda been happening each time I lost boost. Any ideas?

So it's not something to worry about, or it's a common problem?? And whats with the boost loss? I "run" about 16PSI and I'm getting about 9PSI. It's a problem that comes and goes. It happened for half of today, tomorrow it'll be fine. It'll be ok for a week or two, and then 9 pounds again. In second gear if I rev it out high, I notice the boost guage jumps from low (9) to near 20psi. I know somethings not right. Running too rich? Leak? Whats the deal? If I try to bring this to a shop I know that it won't "happen for them" and my car will be acting fine. :talon:

I appreciate that link, thanks. Any ideas to why my car's boost drops, then had that spike? I was told it could be the timing retarding, but what can cause that?!? I think thats why it was glowing, my boost was reading 9PSI but it was like it wasn't spooling. No pull from the turbo. So I think it got overworked on my 15 minute 65 MPH ride home.

ok, so far ive got most of my probs figured out... now im down to my really high egt's.. i dont have a guage, but my manifold and turbo look like if i used a hammer i could reshape them when i lift my hood after driving around...

heres my setup... evo8 560cc injectors.. aeromotive afpr set at 43 with out vaccum, 7es plugs... 20g running about 21psi at wot.... wideband 02 showing around mid 14's when crusing and from mid 11's to low 12's at wot...also maft, 3" intake and exhuast, hks wastegate, custom 02 housing

but its always glowing.. wether crusisng around, or blasting through the gears... pulls GREAt... but im afraid im gonna damage somegin wtih the high heat

thanks

j

Yup, normal.

Actually, many NA cars will glow as well. But no one ever bothers to look.

Keep those heat shields in good repair.

I would still check my ignition timing if I were you. It shouldnt do that under normal driving even with a hard pull or 2. Yes, it will do it on an extended dyno pull or a REALLY hard drive... chances go up if you have a clogged cat too.

THANKS!! i checked base timing, and it was WAY too far advanced.... i backed it off to like 6 or so btdc and....

1... it no longer glow's under normal driving...

2.. it doenst glow near as much under boosting

3... IT FREAKIN PULLS HAAARRRD NOW!!

anybody know where i can find a track in iowa thats still open??

Hi guys, have a 90 TSI Talon, car has been running great, leaks a small bit of oil by the turbo at idle, however today on the way to work, it stuttered only once during 3rd accell on to freeway after about a 20 min drive. Another 10 mins showed the stutter again on accell but stayed under vacuum cruise, then slowly went away. Car revs with a stutter, but idles fine. On the drive home, car seemed fine, till it was warm, and I finally pulled about 7psi of boost, total stutter, and took about one minute to clear up. Now it still stutters in the driveway under accell, and starts to miss at idle. Car has 180K, completely stock withe cat cutoff and a flow thru muffler. Tonite the exhaust manifold was glowing red again after about a 30 min drive under cruise conditions. Car gets 28 MPG, and was very stout till today. No recent mods, but I did change the timing belt about 6 months ago, no troubles.

Its Dark out, will pull plugs and check wires in the morning, is there anything I can be looking for?

Car is missing like its lost a plug wire...........but there all ther, will OHM out in the morning.

Nathan

So far I have been able to get the plugs checked, all look great on the lighter side of chocolate brown. Is a glowing manifold on just a cruise run at 65MPH normal, have never checked in the dark. Cannot locate a ohm meter, so will get new wires tomorrow, neighbor is checking............

I Live in Washintion, weather in the warm 50* this time of year.

Nathan

Neighbor found his Fluke meter. All wires ohm out at around 5ohms a pc. Restarted the car, all was well, car revved freely, took it for a spin cold, stuttered at 12psi, got the car a little warmer, and starts to stutter at 10psi now, almost like a switch, it stutters, then no stutter. Got home afer about 5 minute drive, fully warmed, rev in the driveway fine. Does not seem to be a plug in the exhaust, maybe the wires are ohming out and cant fire the plugs under boost?

Any ideas?

Nathan

Check for any intake leaks. An intake could cause this.

Also, the manifold will sometimes glow. It gets pretty hot. Thats what the heatshield is for. :thumb:

I replaced the wires and plugs today, so far spot on, have not drove it a long way, only for about 5 mins, but no more stuuter gearing up on the freeeway like I did before. Wonder if I was not buring all the fuel and it was lighting off in the manifold. Need to go to work tomorrow will drive for a half hour then and check the manifold after a nonturbo run.

Thanks for your help.

I need to ressurect this thead.i have the glowig described after hard runs and I am talking hard boost a dozen times just before pulling into my garage. Of course I let the motor run until all has cooled. Is this condition caused more with a rich or lean condition or neither/both? i run a fairly rich a/f, like a 10.5:1. I would prefer not to see it glowing like I do as it is discomforting. Some time cruising aroud the block first will be my course of action in the future. If the timing is being pulled that would conribute to the hot running would it not? just lookng for anything that would decrease the glowing manifold and turbine. thanks, Mark
