gen 2 maf in a gen 1

do i need a safc to run a gen 2 maf in my 90 tsi awd, i ready a few threads some say i do and others say i don't. i am getting ready to buy 550 and stage 3 keydrive chip
any info would be helpful

yes. The 2g maf puts out around a 20% different hertz signal for the same airflow. The 1g maf will think around 20% less air is flowing into the engine than what actually is, so you'll run terribly lean and the ecu will run a more aggressive timing map. Both the makings of a blown headgasket or worse. . .

You don't "need" to run a SAFC with a 2G MAFS if you are running a keydrive chip programmed properly. I would however recommend it so you can do some fine tuning after everything is installed. Mail order chips are a good "approximate" tune, but every car differs from one another so the fine tuning would really benefit you.
