gearbox or new tranny?

Hey, i need help diagnosing my problem.. my car can go to first and reverse... but 2-5 don't work.. it feels like it's not there.. the shifter just wiggles around.. i'm thinkin it's the gearbox or linkage.. but what are your guys' opinions? do i need a whole new tranny?

Check that the shifter linkage is correctly attached to the tranny, and that the linkage bracket is bolted down tightly to the transmission... Then, check the shifter assembly itself, and make sure it's bolted down, and nothing appears broken (obvious things broken.) Sounds to me like you have something loose for the shifter to just "wiggle" around

I would have to agree...also some light for you would be that 5th and 1st are far aprt so it would seem that the gear line is ok but you may ultimatly have some shift rail issues or forks.

But again check the cables first.
