Gauge for temps before & after IC?

really curious as to any chance of a boost leak from mounting the sensor in there like that. I would be afraid of high boost either leaking or blowing the sensor out of the hole completely. Also, how fast does the gauge react to the temps?

also, what is this radio shack version that you guys keep talking about  please explain

You guys should try using this one.http://www.coolerguys.com/840556000327.html I bought one, Im still trying to figure out were to I'm going to insert the probe and how I'm going to wire it since it uses 5v.
It has a blue backlight and turns purple when you set temp alarm. Its a very nice unit for the price. :thumb:

The hole is threaded so there is no leakage. My Nordskog reacts fairly quick. You can see how the piping heat soaks while sitting for a while but within a few minutes of driving it drops 40*. Mark

I use that exact unit. I extended the wiring to the probe and stuck it in the fins in the intercooler, on the back side. But once again this measures the temp of the I/C, not the air passing thru it. Its very accurate and very responsive. It lets me know if i'm heatsoaking the SMIC. The temp goes up as much as 50 degrees when I do a pull. I dont think that probe will be able to measure temps as high as the ones in the actual piping, it was originally designed to measure temps of a CPU in a computer.

The link page shows it's rated for 194°F, and turbine output can easily top 225°. However, I wonder if that gauge could accept a different thermistor.

eclipsegsx1736 how did you wire it in? Did you just connect the power and ground to it? Or did you use any resistors to limit the current and voltage? And I'm pretty sure that you can wire another thermistor to it with higher temp readout if needed. The screen shows two temp readouts, T1 and T2. So you might be able to use it to get a before and after ic temp readout.

Her's a pic of it in action.

Yes, the probe is threaded in, so if done correctly, it shouldn't have a leaking problem. Keep in mind the probe grounds itself out through it's mounting surface, so any kind of sealer could impair it's ability. The gauge reacts as fast as the temp change, but the twmps don't change super quick.

Looks good! What would be the ambient temp when you have the intake charge around 80*F? I ordered the dual sensor kit for $90.90 plus shipping. Curious to see how well my FMIC is doing! mark
If, I'm reading 80* on the gauge, the outside air temp is usually around 60*. Typically for me, the gauge seems to read about 20* warmer than the outside air temp. What does yours read?

Ohh, and I know what you mean about IC piping heatsoak. It scared me the first time I started my car after it had been sitting in the sun all day - my gauge read 145*!! But as soon as I started driving, it quickly falls down 40* or so.....

I ended up just using 1 sending unit as Defiant says the compressor temps are over what the gauge can read which in the case of the Nordskog is 200*F. The after IC cooling is the importand temp anyways. I am seeing about 25-30* over ambient. The Nordskog can be purchased from Summit with 1 sending unit for around $58. Mine reads in the 90's which isn't as bad as I thought it might be for the small Spearco 2-221 I am running. Mark

Different thermistors would change resistance differently based on changes in temperature so unless there was a way to recalibrate the gauge, probably not.

FYI.. there is a ton of information on how to convert the IAT signals to 0-5V on Innovate Motorsports website. I'm currently trying to figure out if/how to datalog with a GM IAT using the EGR Temp port ;)

I ran the unit off a 9 volt battery, which i stuck to the back of the LCD. So its a self powered little unit. Don't worry about battery life with the 9 volt, it basically poweres it forever. Ive left it on so many times for days. Ive probably had that LCD powered by the same 9 volt for a year and it hasnt died. Also, it only detects one temperature. The top temperature displayed is the warning. You set the warning temp, and when the bottom display reaches the top the alarm goes off.
