Ok hopefully this is the right place for this thread but anyways my Talon uses a ton of gas. I'm not really sure why though. Maybe a bad fuel pump or something? Sorry it's so vague but if anyone knows something that could help me with bad gas mileage then that'd be great. Thanks

Spark plugs, fuel filter, wires, checking mechanical and ignition timing, making sure you have a functional o2 sensor, and air filter been inspected to be in good working order? Do you have bigger injectors/a higher flowing fuel pump without proper compensation for them?

Ok. Like I should be getting about 25mpg in city and I filled my tank up Friday night and I'm on almost empty today. I haven't driven it hard or anything and I know my gas provider is good because I use it all the time and it works fine with the rest of our cars. The car runs strong and is in pretty good condition. The only mods to it is an exhaust system. I'm not sure what type because it came with the car. I haven't switched it yet because I just bought it a week ago.

Here is the car if you wanna look at it btw and it'll explain that I'm pretty new to DSM's. So I'm not sure what an egr is or how to do a boost leak test. I'll go check the plugs, filters, O2 sensor, etc. also. The only thing that happens is the engine coolant level light comes on every once in a while and sorta flashes faintly but then after I accelerate up or shift down it'll turn off. It happens in lower gears but it's totally random. Sometimes it won't do it at all. I know for a fact though the fluids are all topped off because I just had the oil and fluids done on Saturday so it's not a fluid level issue related to that light. I'm not sure why it comes on though.

Anyways if you need more info I can get it for you. Just let me know. Thanks.

Does the brake light come on faintly with the radiator fluid level light? That's a sign of a dying alternator, over time you'll notice it happens more and more frequently, those lights go on when the alternator is not charging the battery.

Just sayin', not really related to the original problem.

Ok so i checked my plugs and my air filter and they're in tip top shape. Almost brand new. I'm a student so that's all I had time to do tonight. What should I check next? Also idk if this relates to anything but my engine runs extremely hot. Like it heats up the bar that holds the hood up to a point where it's too hot to hold on to. If that's relevant then cool otherwise yeah LOL that's another thing I noticed after driving it for the first week.

Oh sorry I didn't answer that before. Um... ok well this will sound retarded but by codes what do you mean? I probably should know this but I'm drawing a blank :ohdamn:

Nope nothing at all. It's totally blank. The lights only come on sometimes because i have bad leads on my battery so once those are replaced then all the lights will be off while it's running.

You def will NOT be getting 25 mpg. No way, no how. You have an awd, so automatically your going to have less mpg. Not much less, but less. Also, your driving style has A LOT to do with mpg. Heavy foot? Do you like to drive fast & launch hard? Do you like to hear your BOV make sweet whistle sounds? If you answered yes to any of those, you are reducing mpg. Build boost tells the ecu to add more fuel. Fuel Injection is beast.

I've gotten 300 miles to a tank recently from driving like a grandma & the help of mostly highway mileage because of my job. But maintenance is important. I had HORRIBLE mpg when my front o2 sensor was shot & a combo of an ecu shorting out after an o2 splicing error.

Check everything, read HARD! This site can transform your car IF you let it. Take your time & read. Your car will thank you later. If you check my photo gallery, I have pix of before & after. My car looks NOTHING like what my grandma gave me on graduation :hellyeah:

Thanks for all your input guys. And I have been driving pretty conservatively actually since one more ticket and I lose my license. Anyways I need to check my o2 sensor and my fuel filter. I've located the filter but I'm not sure where my o2 sensor is at or how to check it. Could give me a link to a guide or post telling how to check it? Thanks. :thumb:

I dont mean to burst your bubble or anything, but I've gotten around 32 mpg and 390 miles to a tank of gas with a 14B turbo and an ETS front mount on my 95 GST. Although, Im having the same issues with my 97 AWD Talon, I usually get around 12 mpg with that thing. I can't figure it out at all.

What is your car actually getting for mileage? Reset the tripometer next time you fill up, then when you fill up again divide your mileage by the gallons u put in. Without knowing exactly what you are getting for mileage there isn't any hard proof to base it off of.

You should be getting about 20-25 city. I averaged about 27-30 with my stock 2g back in the day.
