Garrett FREIGHTLINER Intercooler

This is it, gentlemen. The ender of all intercoolers... and I just might put it on my car.

FREIGHTLINER FLD112 Charge Air Cooler by Garrett. Garrett PN 485800-5003. It's an aftermarket upgrade for FLD112 short hoods. High efficiency core & cast aluminum end tanks. You can tell the end tanks were designed with laminar flow in mind, and to distribute the flow across the entire core. 4" inlet and outlet. Surprisingly light weight for it's size. The volume is also amazingly low. This thing is a real piece of engineering.

The one from my father's old Freightliner cabover made that thing look like a sidemount.

It was definitely as wide as the intercooler in your photo, but twice the height (if the inlets are supposed to be on the side). It basically took up the entire grille space of the truck.

Yeah, it's a baby among the big boys. I was looking at a few bigger ones until I realized I wouldn't be able to see the road over them.

My radiator is already relocated, so I might chop the front cross member and reweld a tubular cross member that allows this beast to nestle in there. It will be at an angle, that's for sure.

I had to get the out the angle grinder, cut some frame, and delete power steering to get this point. So far, it looks like it's within reach while retaining drivable ground clearance.

The air coming out of this behemoth will be pretty close to ambient temperature.

What is in reach? The hood will not close correctly with that in your car. Take some measurements and calculate the surface area of that thing. Yes it has huge frontal area but it is what 1.25" thick? This is why most intercoolers on our cars are 2.5" to 4" thick. Smaller frontal area but same or maybe even more surface area.
