Garrett FREIGHTLINER Intercooler

It was funny when it was mounted as a joke. Now that you are actually going to ignore all common sense, it stands for everything I hate about many dsm's and dsm owners. There is absolutely no thought going into the cooling that this unit is going to be doing, other than it's freakin huge. It's tilted too much to get flow through the core, and once the piddly amount of air that gets through it is past it, where's it going to go? Fail. Go put some dubs on your car to match your intercooler.

When you get up into the 4" and 5" thick intercoolers the ambient air flow through the core can actually go down. No way they are getting lots of air through the 6" thick cores they use for drag supras. The cooling starts to rely on the mass of the intercooler more than exchanging the heat from the inside to the outside. In that respect this cooler has some advantages, it has a very large thermal mass, and it is thin enough to still provide efficient heat transfer.

The tilt isn't a huge deal. Use the pythagorean theorum to find the frontal area presented to the incoming air and I imagine it's still as big (or significantly bigger) than any other readily available unit. With the modest amount of frontal area lost, you still retain the gigantic flow area which helps keep pressure drop low. It is not uncommon to see ducted V mount radiators and/or intercoolers on race cars to make the most efficient use of the space available.

It is totally unnecessary, but I'm betting it was something that was going to get thrown away, scrapped, or forever lost upon someone's shelf at some point. I didn't think you'd get the damn thing in there, but it appears to be smooth sailing from where you are now. Good work removing the power steering.

How will you be making the transitions from turbo outlet/throttle body to the 4". There is a lot of pressure drop to be lost in those areas.

A2W is bad ass, but some people just have to be even more different than the different crowd.

nice.. really great way to treat your fellow dsm'ers. if he wants to put a freightliner intercooler on his car, let him. you know you dont have to view the thread.
If nobody ever tried anything new , we would still all be using afc's and 16g's

You think nobody ever said a gt42r was way to big for a dsm and it would never spool and blah blah blah?
They are probably the most looked at turbocharger for the dsm owner looking for sub 9.5's

I'm all for new ideas that have a technical basis to them, that follow physics and logic. This clearly has no research whatsoever to it, and anyone with a basic knowledge of physics and fluid dynamics can see it is a failed argument with no background knowledge or research. This is purely for shock value, and to me belongs in the same category as fart cans, huge rims, and hellaflush, some other "performance mods" that are derived from some actual performance basis but have been bastardized to be cosmetic to the point that they degrade performance in most cases. This is an attention getter, nothing more, and nothing competitive with any well-engineered aftermarket intercooler (ETS, Buschur, etc) but just like heavy, shiny, huge, poor handling rims, it will have its fans, who love big shiny things, because they are big and shiny.

I can't wait to see the outcome of this and to see if there are any actual gains from it. It may be stupid to some but this is how lots of things have gotten started with our cars. Back to what compression said we would still be tuning with SAFC and running 16g's if someone didnt step out of the norm and try something totally different. At the end of the day if it doesn't work so what, at least he gave it a try. Its not going to take anyone's life or end the world or anything like that so lighten up a bit.
