I have a 91 galant vr4. I bought it from a friend who said the clutch was replaced prior to me buying it. The vehicle has all its forward gears but I cannot get it into reverse. Also the clutch engages about a inch from the floor. I looked under the dash and the push rod for the clutch pedal is adjusted all the way to its last threads on the pedal. I'm wondering if it is a transmission issue, clutch, cables or hydraulic? Does the clutch pedal have an adjustment on it? Are there know issues with reverse in these transmission.

I'm talking from a 2g view point but 91 galant is probably the same.

Often with reverse shifting wear, the reverse idler gear's teeth get rounded instead of pointed which makes it hard to get into reverse. Quite often if you let the clutch out to where it just barely starts to grab while trying to shift into reverse, it will slip in.

Another no reverse possibility is if the backup light switch washer is missing This is a very common problem as lots of folks lose the washer or over tighten the backup light switch when reinstalling the trans which leads to 5th and reverse lockout.

And if 5th is also hard to find, you may need shifter cable adjustment or have a very worn select lever shoe.

For the clutch, check the fork position in the tranny window. It should be just right of center (http://www.roadraceengineering.com/eclipsetech/clutch/armcentered.jpg). If it's left of center your clutch disk, PP, flywheel (if resurfaced), and fork geometry probably changed (from geometry before clutch replacement), so you may now need fork pivot ball shimming (which requires tranny removal). No clutch rod adustment is going to fix this.

How is this done? I don't see how the fork window would be big enough to get in there to do what's necessary.
Remove the slave and boot. Grind down a open wrench so there’s enough clearance to flip the wrench back and forth (it takes a little while since you’re only turning it about 1/8”). Cut the washer and put it on a magnet (orientation is important). Then use a flat head to push it into place. If the washer falls, you can get lucky and fish it out blindly with a magnet. If not, you’ll have to pull the trans regardless. I have a spare trans so I’ll make a video.

Interesting. So it sounds like you yourself have done this then? So you leave the fork alone sitting where it is then, and you have enough space to fit the wrench beneath the fork to loosen the pivot ball enough to slide a washer underneath? Sure beats pulling the tranny! I'd think dropping the washer is almost a sure thing. Perhaps stuffing some kind of rag in there, if possible, to catch the washer when it drops might be advisable over hoping you might find it with a magnet (although a magnet certainly is the next thing to try).

Yes I have done it only because someone else told me it was possible (can’t remember who it was…shout out to him). Hold the fork all the way to the d/s. IIRC it won’t or can’t come off the pivot ball. I did drop the washer but luckily I was able to fish it out. Depends where it falls though. Rag in there might be a good idea but as you can imagine, not too much room to work with.
