FWD tranny in AWD

Whats up fellow DSMers. Very recently my tranny in my 90 AWD TSI went out, and I have a N/T tranny laying in my garage and I was wondering if it would fit in for now until I got the money to get my old tranny rebuilt or get a new one. I know that the gear ratios and stuff is different but I dont know if it will fit. Any info given will be appreciated so let me know. Thanks

It definately will not fit, the n/t and turbo engines are made by 2 seperate manufacturers, there are several reasons why it wouldn't fit. First, the N/T tranny has no place to bolt in a transfer case, so you lose both rear wheels, second the axles are of different lengths, so you now lose both front wheels. The bellhousing has a different bolt pattern/ number of bolts. The mounts are different, so you would have no place to mount it, and lastly, If you were to somehow make it all work, since the engines are flipped from each other (look at pics. of where the timing belt is on n/t and turbos) you would have 5 reverse gears and 1 forward.

the 1gs are the same engine basically, they don't have the 420a that you're thinking of, they just have a 4g63 non turbo. second, he's not looking to attach the rear axle.

i think that you shouldn't listen to this post because he's referring more to the 2g to which his points have more validity.

AHH! thats what I get for not reading years , srry man, my mistake, I have a bad habit of assuming that everyone on this site owns a 2g. Please don't listen to that last post of mine.

You can probably do it but you might break the Rear end. because nothing is attach to it.

yes it will work fine.. You just wont have a place to bolt up your t-case. so u wil have to remove your drive shaft. the rear end will be fine as it will just spin freely..

The trannie will bolt up directly with no issues...O you will have to get a drivers side fwd axle as they use a single long one.
