Im going to be getting rid of my small pressbent 2 1/4 exhaust that I have on now with mandrel 2 1/2. I already have the downpipe coming from ebay for 158shipped. Im NOT going to pay over 300 for a catback so Im going to make my own!!
Let the pics roll LOL:D

I made my own 3" turbo back on my 90 GST, there's nothing much custom about it I would say because its pretty much the same this as the stock one except bigger, but I mean the way its routed its exactly the same, I had to made a hanger right around the rear axle since the space its too tight for a 3" pipe and on every bump it used to hit and make ratling noises as well. other than that it was relatively a straight forward installation, I don't have pictures of the back underneath the car, but here's the custom made (by me) downpipe and test pipe...

hope this helps
Regards,

I like it a lot...

Its not the most custom, but I did have to get under there with the saw and make it fit. Its a Megan Racing 3" down pipe and cat resonator. I had a friend at a local exhaust shop hang me 2 1/2" pipe from the Megan resonator back. The car came with a Bro Speed muffler that sounds really good; not that hi pitch crap. Unfortunately do to this all installed on a DSM I have yet to here it run with the new dp and fat cat... :thumb: I'm rebuilding the engine as we speak. I've only had the set up for a month or two. ;)

Why are you doing 2.5" on a turbo car?

Why not? The bigger the exhaust the better. The more air you can flow out of the turbo, then the quicker and more air you can flow into the turbo. In all reality, you don't have to go massive though. 3" is extremely nice, but I've been told by people that work at Shep's shop that until you starting putting out some HP gains into the 300+ HP range, 2.5" is all you really need. I'll post a picture of mine if I can get it, it's not a FWD exhaust, but it's 2.5" and completely custom and flows great. Cost me 16$.

It's all in preference really. We did mine 2.5" all the way back because we just so happened to have about 15 feet of 2.5" piping laying around a friends shop, so we put it to use.

To the origional poster, why don't you go 3". The general rule with a turbo car is the less the back pressure, the better. Even when I ran the tiny t25, my 3" exhaust gave me a nice bump in power, plus it helps with spool. While your doing it you might as well go 3" so you don't need to upgrade in the future if your plans change. You may think 3" isn't much larger then 2.5" but if you calculate the area difference between the two you will see why 3" flows much more.

See thats what Im talkin about!! I said fwd but I gave you awd points to

To daren p, Im not going past a evo16g at 20psi so I figured 2 1/2 was good enough
thanks guys
More pics more rep points LOL

No.

I've got a 2.5" on mine as it's also a little easier to route up and over the axle and around the rear swaybar attachment points. No good pics though, but I'm running a dynamax ultraflow muffler on it with Hooker dual 3" tips on it. Looks alright for now. Exhaust is hanging a little low and offcenter right now.

Even with an evoIII I would still defently recommend a 3", you won't regret it :thumb:

might as well right...
ive heard ppl say- " oh dont get 3in because it wont pull as hard and lost torque, which yea lose of pressure can cause lose of torque but only in the low rpm band and when you race you dont see those rpms, and that theory is more so on n/a.

I think MAVISKI said it best: 3" is hard to run in spots. If its not just right it can rattle on the rear framing.

Anyway, I put that 2.5" on years ago way before I had plans for a engine build.

Not to mention that 2.5" cost me $50 installed. Thats a nether good reason. The down pipe and high flow cat are all 3", so don't worry. When I need the flow, I'll have it. ;)

Hey MAVISKI, I got you coverd on the pic's!

^^ can't you just run it under the rear axle of the 1g's like they do with running under the rear cross member on 2g's?, or does ground clearance become too much of an issue?
I guess you could. Its not hung that way stock. I'd like to hear from someone that tried that. I'd like to see what kind of clearance you get and still clear the axle with out problem? If your going to hit bottom, I'd rather do it on something thats not going to rip off. LOL or crush between it and the axle???

Same with the 2g's they go over from factory but most aftermarket 3" systems route under the cross member. Not sure if the axle sits lower in a 1g but as you can see from my gallery my car sits fairly low and I have zero issues with my exhaust system and ground clearance.
