Usually when there is a backfire, you're running rich. Add in the fact that you're experiencing a slow acceleration problem and you may have an issue with your O2 sensor or fuel system. Have you recently replaced or worked on anything fuel related, including the fuel filler cap, pump, FPR or injectors?

Slow acceleration is more a symptom of poor spark timing, but if you're running rich enough to be backfiring, then there's obviously at least a small fuel related issue.
