Here are two video's. The first one is a Walbro 190 installed, the second is a 255. These were pretty quiet in my friends 1G's, but are very loud in mine. What could cause them to be loud in just my car? Please note, when I changed out the pumps, I also swapped out the carrier and sending units

in every car ive been in with a real whineboro you can here the whine from start to shut off. If you cant its most likely an ebay pump

That sounds pretty normal to me. They're not the quietest pumps in the world.

These are the exact pumps he was using (I bought them off him), but if that is normal, then I am good. I never heard my son's, but his was from eBay I think.

Both of the pumps Thom has now used to be mine, and I ran them BOTH in my car, and neither were even close to being that loud. Also neither were knock-offs, bought the 190 brand new and the 255 was still in the box from the guy I bought it from. Anyway, I think it's really strange that there's such a noise difference between his car and mine. Also to those saying that 190 pumps are loud have obviously never ran one. I myself have had both 180 and 190 pumps, as well as a honda buddy running a 255, and another dsm buddy ran a 190 for awhile.

I've never heard a 190 run loud like that, and I also think that the 255 is louder than most, though I haven't heard it in person yet. Hopefully someone will be able to shed some light on this. The only thing I can think of is that my 255 wasn't re-wired. The 190 was though when I had it, but still never sounded like that, I couldn't even hear it changing noise with the turn signals.

Sounds to me like it would be a difference of voltage at the pump itself, but to be honest with you, I think your exhaust isn't loud enough to drown the noise out. :thumb: Seriously though, I can actuate my pump in ECMLink manually without the car on, and I noticed a definite difference when I re-wired it with the STM kit over my Radio Shack re-wire.

To check my theory, if its that big of a deal, take a multimeter and check voltage at the pump on your buddies car and then yours and see if theres a difference.

His car isn't running anymore. Also, neither of these pumps are rewired. Thats why I mentioned power. I do plan on rewiring it soon. Last night, I also notes that when I turned on my headlights, the alternator belt squealed and would not stop. I tightened the belt, but maybe the alternator is on the way out. I have a spare alternator that I know is good, I will install it

In reference to the above video's, the fuel pump only gets loud after several minutes of running. It starts up quiet, but after 5 minutes, it gets loud?? Fuel Filter is new. Could it be the fuel return line causing the issue? If it were clogged (the check-valve right beside the FP access) or restricted, could it cause the pump to work harder, therefore making the noise?

my 255walbro does sound very similare.
But the loudness of the pump seems to depend on how much the tank is filled.
full and neary empty tank seems to be louder than half tank!

Have you checked fuel pressure at the rail?

:dsm:

Yup. AFPR has a pressure gauge, it is holding pressure fine. I did realize that i did NOT hit fuel cut. BOV hose was not connected, thus not recirculating. This resulted in that seemed like fuel cut when I hit the clutch.

Also, I noticed it changes pitch in sync with the turn signals

If it changes pitch with turn signals then its the amount of voltage you're getting at the pump thats changing. Odds are, the voltage at the pumps in your buddies car was different, which is why it might seem louder in yours.

Sounds right. I will perform the re-wire in the next couple weeks. But, it looks like it is being normal with the whining. Such is life with better-than-stock setup :)

how much gas is in the tank?

when i first installed my 255 it did the same thing, started quite and then got rediculously loud, someone told me the pump was getting hot since i was running with less than a 1/4 tank, i took his word and put in 20 bucks of gas, then restarted the car, the pump started off quite again and never got loud, now i never drive with less than a 1/4 tank

It has 1/2 tank of gas.

I swapped out the fuel filter before work this morning. Pump is still loud (though it gets real quiet when I turn right:confused:). Still stumbling real bad at 4k rpm now. So, now I get to chase down a boost leak and possibly look into swapping out the tank as I may not have been able to get it as clean as it needed to be.

Well, ummm. All I can say is this is embarassing, and I am an idiot :ohdamn: . I built my Boost leak tester and tested the system. Holds 25psi without issue. Then I went about removing the tank from the hybrid talon. I looked inside, the tank was crystal clean, 3/4 full and the gas was the color it should be.

Then

I removed the tank form this project talon. Though I thought I cleaned it sufficiently, I found the source of my lack of power and stumbling. Be forewarned... These pictures are not for the faint of heart:

Attached are the pump sock and tank with fuel

Once I replaced the sock, the tank, I ran the pump in fresh premium for about 15 seconds, allowing it to flush the gas line up to the filter connection. Then installed a fresh WIX fuel filter and tested her out. Needless to say, it hits 20lbs without hesitation and runs free!!!!

Oh yea, forgot to mention. The Wally 255 is very quiet now.

That's some nasty looking gas! My Walbro changes volume all the time, depending on how much gas is in the tank and especially temperature. If I drive like 100 miles the pump screams by the end of the trip!

So what does sewer water run at the pump these days? :p

Actually I had the exact same problem on a old turbo miata.. pulled the pump and the entire tank was rust. Rusty gas, rusty everything, even the rust had rust all over it. Dropped the tank and threw it in the trash, installed a new one :)
