ok was reading all about the 1g fuel pump rewire - relays fuses etc.......now please take this next statement into consideration before replying .......its a dirt track race car - striped to the nines etc..........why cant i run a wire directly to the battery -------since its behind the seat now to the fuel pump from the battery with a on off switch?..........will this work ?..........please respomr asap .........thanks

The relay is a safety item. It is designed to handle more throughput than a toggle switch. Typically, the switch activates the relay which then powers on the fuel pump. However, in your case i don't see any reason why you absolutely need one. IMO, use a 12 gauge wire from the pump to the battery, and place the switch inline wherever you like it. Hope this helps.

They should make you have everything on switches, just in case you need to shut off some components..Make your 12v power wire switched in line, however you want...Just turn on the switch and go...

Battery cut off..Do they require that?

Most switches cannot handle the amp load of a fuel pump.
I would wire in the relay simply for FIRE safety!
you ever seen a electrical fire in a vehicle? Its not pretty!

Use a relay and don't worrie about the extra 10 grams of weight.
after all if the switch fails mid race it will take alot longer to wire a new one in then
simply pulling a relay from it's socket and pushing in another.

Use a relay.

Battery cut off..Do they require that? yes battery shut off is required as well as a fuel shut off and a instant kill swich to shut the car down completely .....im just running lean at 6.5 ---7 grand ---we run second gear in these cars and ive noticed my plugs are showing signs of being lean ----so im looking for a cure at that high rpm range ......thanks

a switch is perfectly fine, on one of my old cars i had a fuel relay problem so i ran a wire from my battery to a toggle on the dash then back to the pump and whenever my relay was acting up and she didnt want to start i would flip the switch and overide the relay and she would fire right up everytime, so yes you can do this no problem.

Most simple toggle switches are rated at 30A AC, why do you think they couldnt handle 15-20A DC?

they can handle it no problem i ran just a single wire, not that big at all with no fuses or anything and i never had a problem

ok ..... now what do you guys think ?...is there a possibility that it will help with my leaning out ?........i mean they do say the fuel pump isnt pumping at its best with the voltage drop ?....toss some things at me here ...thanks

I've never heard of running a wire from battery to your fuel pump. LOL. I guess it would work

Go wire up a FP with a 30amp switch, let it run for a hour. Then tell me how HOT that switch is.

If someone wants to be so dumb as to wire a Fp through a simple toggle switch, Go for it. Just post back here when your car burns down. Beshure to post pics aswell.

A FP on just a toggle. Thats the DUMBEST thing I have heard all year!

ok so i have been scrounging around finding rewire installs and stuff. is there a way to order just two stock plugs that are on the harness of the pump? I wanted to do a super clean rewire, and on the relay socket, hook up each side to the stock harnesses, no hacking at all, just splicing them onto the relay socket wires. any ideas where i can find them? one male one female?

I would hit up the junkyard. You can find everything you need and they are usually high quality wiring components depending on the car you get them from.

thanks. i heard someone say there is a junkyard near san diego with a bunch of dsm's all around

also, would 12ga be fine for rewire? i know 10ga is better, but 2 ga isnt that much difference. just 20ft of 12 ga is a heck of a lot cheaper than 35ft of 10 ga...

ok wired every thing up with a 30 amp fuse works fine - used a heavy duty toggle as well....working like a charm

Have you ran it for any length of time, yet? As well as with the pump under full load, then test the switch for heat?

I dunno, I'm just not a big fan of using the switch to allow power to feed a fuel pump..

Why not use a 5$ 40A Bosch relay, and allow the 'OE' fuel pump wire to trigger the relay, and let the relay feed the 12V to the pump, straight from the battery, rather than (I'm assuming here) having 12g wire go from your battery, allt he way up to a switch you can reach from the driver's seat, through a standard toggle-style switch, then back to the pump. I'm envisioning about 10-12' or more of 12g wire, with a fuse on it. Is the fuse close to the 12v power source? i.e. battery?

The relay is really the 'prefered' method of controlling large amounts of constant current. They work better at it than just a switch. You would only need a relay, small AWG wire for the relay's power/ground, and run the (+) from the batt to the relay, out the other side to the pump, and ground the pump.

I used a 75A toggle for my cooling fans back in the day. It would still get pretty warm if I left it running for extended periods of time.

so its not a probel to run the switch coming off the ground on teh relay right? im hiding it somewhere for an anti theft device, incase they do get in the car...

Yeah running on the ground side is safer than on the hot side thats for sure, thats why most transisters in modules control the ground side of things like fuel injectors....and hidding a switch like that is a great ant-theft device if you want something simple!

my car runs at the most for 45 minutes ...thats while im racing ----my battery is located behind my racing seat on drivers side ....on floorboard in a secured battery box ...so the amount of wire i needed was very minumal ...less then 10 ft .......i used a heavy duty toggle and 10 gauge wire ....fused ... thers been no signs of the switch even getting warm..............now heres a little trick that was taught to me by racers on a budget ----use a common ordinary on off switch that you would use in your house ... they handle 110 current ...so they are not going to be phased by 12 volts .... sure they might not look racy but i do know drivers that have done this ----not me i paid for a heavy duty toggle ----like i was asking on my original post = all im trying to do for now is get more fuel at the higher rpms and im hoping it keeps me from runing lean....im still open for suggestions on any ideas how i can richin my fuel up ....especialy at 6-7 grand ...with out special boxes tools etc ...any one ?...
