So Lately ive been noticing that my car (91 plymouth laser) is Burning to much fuel, its supposed to get 27 city 32 highway but lately it seems like my gas is short. Im not sure what the problem is but i do know i have no leaks, my car burns white smoke, and dip stick has hint of gas smell on it. ad i can definatley smell fuel being burned Valve seal change is needed im sure, but i dont know if this is the problem. Also i have 17 inch tires in rear, and 16 in front, maybe also an issue. And I need an allignment. Im not sure that any of these are the issue with gas, but if you have an opinons please share. ty

how much white smoke do you burn? alot when you take off or driving and taking off? do you have any leaks under the car? and how many miles are on that car

Have you actually calculated your MPG? Miles Driven/Gallons Burned=MPG

Also is this a 2.0L or 1.8L?

According to the picture below you have the stock 16" wheels on the back and 15's up front not 16's and 17's. Anyway, that shouldn't matter

Too answer both of your guys questions it doesnt burn alot of white smoke while driving but it is continuos, and when i start it is when its the worst, also yes i have xalculated and it should be getting 32 to the gallon highway, which is mostly what i drive. and its a 1.8 liter. japanese cyclone engine. the guy i just traded to get thisshowed receipt that almost everything under the hood of this car is new and replaced, but the engine and other new stuff has approx, 80,000 on it and the car it self shows 200,000

Do you know when the head gasket was changed last? A small coolant leak into the combustion chamber(s) could cause a loss of fuel efficiency.

usually on some cars when a engine burns white smoke that shows signs of oil burning but your engine is brand new did he show you papers of the engine rebuild

My records say that the engine was replaced in 03, but it does not say if the gaskets were changed or not. i do have the parts though for a seal job, and the guy said he was gonna do it, so i assume this was never done in the past. I can always smell a hint of gas and oil while driving in my cab. :/ But the good news is that it runs great, and i replaced my idle speed control motor , and motor position sensor, bc the car was idling strange, reving up and down, but i fixed that

True, it should get a tune up, i might as well do the whole nine yards, fluids change, seal job, etc. that way i cant miss the problem and it will do the car good. But i do have one other strange thing going on. Its a manual trransmission, performace clutch kit, short throw, w/e, but for some reason theres a wining, possibly scratching noise in 1st and 2nd? Im thinking its just axel noise, or something like that.. am i wrong?

also yes i have xalculated and it should be getting 32 to the gallon highway, which is mostly what i drive.

Ok... So it SHOULD be getting 32mpg. Who Cares...??

What is it ACTUALLY getting? 15? 10? That is what I was trying to ask you. That's what I mean when I asked you if you had calculated your mileage. Top your car off and then drive 100miles. Then top it off again. Then divide the miles you drove (100) by how man gallons you put in and you get MPG.

If you calculated it and you're actually getting 32mpg that's pretty good!! And there shouldn't be any gas smell coming from your engine oil.

i'd estimate its getting 24 to the gallon right now, when i first got it a full tank would last me a week, now it last me three to four days, and no there shouldnt be gas smell in engine oil, but there is because of the gaskets i suppose

When was the last time you changed out the O2 sensor? That's generally the biggest culprit of bad gas mileage. The ECU will richen the mixture up to protect the engine because it doesn't know how much it's getting. Sometimes it will set off the check engine light and sometimes not. Is the CEL on?

like you said change the fluids in your transmission put good oil in there like syncromesh or some top quality oil that will do your tranny some good. and do the whole tune including wires and everything else that was metioned in this thread then take her for a drive you should see a great improvement

My receipts tell me tha the sensor was replaced in 07, along with the tps, but i just got this car so i dont know much about it yet, and no the cel is not on, it was until i replaced the idle speed control. and also ty you for the advice everyone, it is highly appreciated, im not just gonna drive this car around like its trash. this car will be beastly after im finished with it. so ty again
