Who here removed there bumper support to fit in a big fmic?? if so i wanted to know if theres a good way to support the front bumper ( so its not flimsy ) . anyone have any pics.

Im working on mine right now. I had it set up ok, but under the headlights would sag a bit. I went to Lowes and got some sheet metal bracing w/ holes already in it, and cut and bolted them to where I wanted. I'm sure I'll come up with something better for next season.

check out dejonpowerhouse.com and go to DSM>1G Racing Bumpers. a bit expensive but it bolts right up. once I buy a bigger fmic I might look into making some sort of support that doesnt block larger intercoolers as much.

I have the dejontool bumper support but when i installed my fmic i didnt even use it because it wasnt really needed. but then again im running a ADFX core with dejontool piping.

hope that helps
david

Another way to do it is to cut the bumper support just off where they bolt in at. So you have both of the peices that bolt in but no actual support in the middle. That's how I did it on my 91 and I had no sagging what so ever.

On the lower lip of my bumper I used a piece of flat steel and it is bolted to the bumper, the FMIC, and the frame. For the upper it's held up by the stock holes and one zip tie to the hood latch. I've followed other DSMer's and they all say you can't even tell. At speed with the long steel rod in there it doesn't give at all. I'll take some pics if you want this weekend. There is a little bit of a curve to the center of the lower front bumper but it's hardly noticeable. I would have needed a thicker piece of steel to force no bend at all but I haven't noticed any issues with it the way it is now. I think it looks good. I tried to sawzall the support but that wasn't happening at all. Someone had an idea just to complete cut out the middle section and leave the bolt on frame pieces but that didn't work to well for me. I went through two recip saws and a sawz all and then said screw it.

I fabbed brackets to support my bumper cover. Mine is a 2G, so these wont be exactly like one for a 1G, but it might give you some ideas.

Here's a pic of the lower bracket.

I'll get the other pics off of my home computer on my lunch break today and I'll edit my post.

LOL does that help put extra weight on the front wheels :p just giving you a hard time about your WWD. it seems like if you have a 2g with a greddy fmic you might want to do what he did ^

Using mild steel tubing and a press pipe bender, I fabricated this support and bolted it to the shock absorber on the stock bumper support. It supports the bumper cover and would probably protect the intercooler in a low speed accident. The radiator supports are also welded to the brackets underneath the support, so it could be repositioned, allowing the stock fans and short route piping to fit.

mines zip tied on. Im trying to find a low weight support to keep the damn thing from flopping around. Paul, is that hollow steel tubing? I like that but im thinking aluminum might be better, although more expensive

Yeah, it's hollow steel tubing. I can't remember the diameter though. The lower piece only weighs a few lbs. It's pretty light.

Thats what I did on my 2g. Works great, took 2 minutes to cut, and in the event of an accident there is still some sort of support there this way.

thank god you switched from that greddy intercooler to a short route intercooler. how did you have it with the greddy fmic, it looks like the piping goes right over the support beam hole.

A plasma cutter, oxy torch or even an angle grinder on the stock support does wonders. I've already had a fellow tuner back into my car with my hacked up support and I will always believe it saved my intercooler's life. It bent but didn't touch my cooler. Take a look at my picture and you can imagine how much material is left behind the plastic.

I plan on rivoting sheetmetal to my front bumper this year and fiberglassing, laying and sanding body filler to create a more finished look on the bumper.

Yes, this SBR FMIC kit is much nicer than my old GReddy kit. With the GReddy, I used the lower support, but I didnt have the supports underneath the headlights. I just made those about a year ago. Though they would have worked with the GReddy FMIC as well.
