As I further progress on assembly of my motor I have come to the reality that I won't have it back together completely until the midst of January at least. I was curious if there would be any trouble with starting a motor up for the first time in Iowa January weather (0-30 degrees F). Right now I have the short block put together and the head on. Just need to order a full gasket set, timing belt kit, oil pump front case, and some sensors/misc stuff; And I should be good to go. But with my income and budget, it will be about January before that can happen.

Try to do things in a garage for the first start up. At those temps the oil will be quite thick so make sure the motor is very well primed and don't be cheap on the assembly lube. You can also call a machine shop in your area and ask for there advice on a brand new motor being fired up for the first time in sub zero temperatures and how it should be ran every day in that temperature. They will probably tell you to let it warm up and to use a quality brand oil.

Everything will be done in an insulated garage, but it will still be pretty cold. I used really thick honey like assembly lube.

No problem at all just use some 5w30 and prime her up before you start her up
