Does anyone know of a shop that machines flywheels that I can mail it to? I tried emailing JAM and Buscar and didnt get a response. Called RRE and they no longer offer the service. I live in a very remote early and driving 2+ hours to a reputable shop for this is a bet much for me. I'd prefer to support a vendor. Thanks in advance.

Also not sure if it matters but it's a ACT flywheel.

You're probably better off ordering a new one because even if you do find someone they probably won't know how to resurface to proper step height. Our flywheels need to be accurately measured.

@oneslowwdsm i was hoping one of our vendors could get the step right. Shame to throw out a flywheel with life left on it but you guys are probably right. Easier to get a new one. Just didn't want to waste the money if I didn't have to.

Don't assume a new one will have the correct step height. If your flywheel is in good shape, find a shop that can do it. Even if you have to ship it with a return label.

I take my flywheels that I want resurfaced to a machine shop (not an engine machining shop) & have them pressure pad it and single point the face. This is something that can be done on a manual & no need for CNC. Do not let anyone tell you that their flywheel grinding machines will do a true surface because most shop will not true up their wheel or machine and the surface will end up conical rather than flat.

Try TMZ, Jacks, and or TRE. I believe they still offer this service for us. Also just an FYI our flywheels fit perfectly in a USPS medium flat rate box so you can get it to them cheap and fast.

TMZ responded and said that they aren't a machine shop and would need to ship it out as well. Waiting for Jacks and TRE to respond. Hopefully someone comes through.

Update: TRE doesn't offer the service either. waiting on response froms JacksTrans.

If you're really in a pickle, my local machine shop does it. I just had mine resurfaced yesterday to .610 step height.

@danielsl1999gsx thanks for the offer man. I really appreciate it. Ill let you know what I decide. @bastarddsm was right about ACT. I sent them an email early this morning and they responded. They will machine your ACT flywheel. It would cost $65 and you would also need to account for shipping both ways. They also provide some great info if you have someone machining your flywheel locally. Some of it is already covered in the TRE and RRE websites but some of this was not.

Thanks for your email and support of ACT products.

Based on the year and model, the part you should have a 600160 (please confirm)

The step for this flywheel should be DOWN .612" (so the friction surface that the disc makes contact is recessed .612" lower than that of the bolting surface for the pressure plate).

It is important to note, the flywheel can only be cut so many times before it needs to be replaced. As a general rule, .040" - .050" of material can be removed before it may affect something.

Here are a few notes to make sure the machinist doing the work understands.

    1. Qualified shop that will grind it, not turn it on a lathe. A lathe will not cut evenly through the hard spots. Cutting through the hard spots with a lathe will take off more material than necessary. Hard spots are fine, but high spots or uneven surfaces are not.
    2. Inspect for cracks or other damage. Cracks can propagate, fretting of the crank mating surface can be troublesome. Never reuse a severely overheated cast iron flywheel.
    3. Dowels pins re-installed or replaced to properly locate the pressure plate. Some shops grind through them because they are too hard to get out.
    4. Rebalanced after resurfacing if possible. This can be tricky because balancing equipment varies and so does the skill on how to use it.

As for your original question, yes we do indeed resurface flywheels. There is a $65.00 fee for this, it will include a proper resurface to our specification, new dowel pins, and balancing. It will also be required that you pay for shipping to and from us.

If you decide you want to send it into us, let me know and I will send you over the information to set up an RGA request.

    Thanks,

    Michael Mckaig

I use the clutch exchange here in Denver. They are less than 10 minutes from my house and charge $40-50 depending on what I need done. Had at least 6-7 flywheel done this year. They did my friends Subaru I just finished building an engine for and when I put an engine in a friend's skyline they did that flywheel as well.

Jackson Auto Machine does it. I've had a flywheel resurfaced there before. Not sure why they aren't responding.

@GST with PSI i can try emailing them again. I've read that they do some great work and they have a good reputation so not sure why they never emailed me back. Also, did you mail in the flywheel or are they local?

Is there a problem with calling rather than hoping someone replies to an email? Talking to a human usually means a proper response and superior service. I could not tell you what else they may offer as they are local so I just drive down there. As I said, a phone call sure does wonders.
