Flywheel bolt "slop"?

Two questions:

1. What is the hole in the crank and flywheel (that is not a bolt hole) for? It looks like a spring pin goes there for alignment, but mine didn't have it when I pulled it. (And the flywheel has rust in that hole, so I know I didn't just overlook it). If it is there, it got buried back into the crank somewhere in the past.

2. If this is not for a pin, should there be a tiny bit of rotational play with all 6 bolts in? I have a new flywheel and new bolts... with all six in and finger snug, the flywheel stays centered and flush, but will rotate around the crank just enough to feel it; maybe a few thousandths.

The manual doesn't show any alignment pin that I can see, so I'm a bit perplexed...

Im not sure about the alignment pin. I dont remember one for when I pulled my clutch and flywheel but that was a long time ago. Also having to do with the "slop." The holes in the flywheel will have a larger diameter then the flywheel bolt diameter, so if they are only finger tight there is no real force holding the flywheel in place so it will rotate true like you said but that little bit of diameter difference will cause it to "shimmy" back and forth. Once you torque it, I would think it should be fine.

there's no pin, it's just an indexing hole so you can line up the flywheel properly, for my 7 bolt anyway.. I assume it's the same.
 
There is supposed to be a dowel pin in the 7th, smaller hole. It's pressed into the crank, and fits snug in the flywheel. Like Defiant said, the flywheel has a very tight limit on runout. You don't want your flywheel wobbling at all, so go to the dealer and order a new crank dowel pin, Mitsu part # MD005994 before you put the flywheel back on.

The tight fit of the dowel is the reason some people have trouble removing the flywheel even when all the bolts are off.
 
Thanks Pneumo...kinda figured there should be one. Where'd you find that p/n? I don't see it anywhere in my manual or CAPS.

I'm hoping that mine isn't back in the crank and I just can't see it. If it is, I don't know how you'd ever get it pulled back out without dropping the crank... which ain't gonna happen :)

Nah, the hole doesn't go all the way through. It either fell out during a catastropic event, or someone took it out.

I got the part # from my version of CAPS, which I got several years ago.
 
How tight a fit is the pin in the crank? Could it be tapped in with a hammer, without flattening it? (I'm guessing it's pretty well hardened)

Yes, it can be tapped in with a hammer. It's a light press fit. Make sure the pin doesn't go in crooked and you won't have to worry about mushrooming.
