uh newbie question... wtf is sound deadening?
Your car is bad ass, flash. Are you going to tear down the trunk as well? I see a lot of plastic in there!

looks like a hell of a good time flash! keep up the very impressive work!

I literally just got done doing the sound deadening.

I bought a torch from Wal-Mart and a heavy duty spatula type deal that I found in the carpentry/paint section and went at it. Took about 3-4hrs and I'd say it was about 15lbs or so.

Heat the tar in a particular section till you can see small boils and then use the spatula. I also used a mallet on the back of the spatula in certain areas.

It is a good time. It's keeping me busy.

Dry ice would have been so much easier. Literally took me about 15 minutes to put up that spot under the rear seat.

Yes you can. That is what I did. I used about 6 cans free from work.

Flash, car looks good.

Thanks. :thumb:
More updates coming soon, parts continue to arrive and I continue to make minute progress.

Today, I got my 91-94 1g throttle body from Tstkl on here. Tstkl has like a ton of these so he hooked me up with one since he knew I needed one. Thanks dude! And it will be shipped off to be rebuilt soon enough!

I received a new throttle body elbow from Albert at DV/DT Fabrications.

Nice looking man! Should have just saved the trouble and lowered the battery about 6 inches, thats what I did, relocated it to where my evap. stuff was and you can barely see it now.

How do you lower that battery tray? Do you need a new tray or did you just simply move the oem tray and bolt it where the charcoal canister was?

Just got done with the tar also. $1.09/lbs for dry ice at the local fred meyer haha. It took me a long time, but maybe thats because I only bought 3 lbs. A chisel and a hammer are definitely helpful too. I've heard of using an air chisel but never tried it myself.

Grant, any chance you know how the windshield washer solvent reservoir bracket was removed from the spare wheel well? I'm just starting to get things together for my battery relocation, and am trying to figure out the best way to go about removing it without tearing through the metal where the spot welds are.

Chavez, to answer your question: Sound deadening is a tar-like mat that the factory puts down in certain areas of the car (behind the rear speakers, in the spare wheel well, etc.) that cut down on road noise. The drawback is that it weighs a lot. In cars like ours, where we really don't care about a little extra road noise, it's desireable to remove the sound deadening. However, as mentioned, it's like tar, and is about as much fun to remove as root canal is enjoyable. On my friend RJ's 1g, we used the "old screwdriver/hammer" method, which took a day, followed by the "3" sanding disc" method, which took another 3 hours, followed by the "shop vac" method. Overall, I estimate at least 25 lbs of the black stuff were removed.

To give you all a general idea.

Send it over to Jim (Auto RS T). He'll hook you up. He's got mine right now. :thumb:

How did you eliminate your evap stuff?
I'm having some issues with a CEL due to the evap purge valve malfunctioning... would love to pull all that worthless weight and needless plumbing mess out of the front of the car.

Got my OMP kill switch from HRPWorld . I picked this because it had a little removable key. Pretty neat. Other than that, I have just been running wires. I haven't come up with a nice way to run the wires through my firewall yet. I could just drill a hole and run wires, but that seems shoddy. I'll be swinging by 3R Racing Thursday to try to get some ideas.

grant, is that you in the hat??

btw, my sound crap has been coming off with just my fingers for the most part. Obviously there are parts I have been unable to take off, but every time I look at it I find some rather large chunks that just come off easily. I'll grab some dry ice and finish the deal off. good to know.

good luck with the throttle body, although I personally am not a fan of ffwd.

I decided on throttlebodys.com. That guy is super nice, and already finished my throttle body. :thumb:

Sorry for the thread jack, just thought id show, its easy to rebuild a tb.....

I stopped by 3R today to chat with a buddy and get some direction for my own project from one of their 997 GT3 Cup cars. I snapped a few pictures. The level of build quality on the 3R Porsche's is super high. I highly admire the work my buddy does. I've been around these Cup cars a number of times. Porsche actually sells the GT3 Cups cars to be turn-key race-ready. So much has been changed to comply with rules, but to the untrained eye the average person would never notice.
3R made this mounting plate for their Motec dash display. They will most likely be making me one for my Stack. Their mounting plate looks identical to the factory plate that came on the Cup car.

The wiring is top notch and very clean. This car didn't come wired this way. Inspiration.

I wish I got a picture of the way the balance bars were mounted to the brake master cylinder. But I'm not working on brakes now, so it wasn't a priority of mine.
