i have a COMPLETELY stock engine. and i want to upgrade the turbo as one of my first mods. i don't necasarily want the biggest and best. just better than the stock turbo. i also don't want to have to add that many other mods when i swap the turbos. NEED SUGGESTIONS for a simple inexpensive swap! any advice is appreciated, as long as it is REAL advice and not just an opinion off the top of someones head. thanks.

You could go with a 16G but you'll have to get an install kit. If you don't want to get the install kit then you can get the T-28.

well without any fuel mods or anything of that sort i'd say you could do the simple 14b swap. Or you could also get a 16g but only run low psi because your fuel system wont allow much more then stock.

I'd say get some supporting mods before you go thinking about diving head first into a turbo upgrade :thumb: http://www.dsmtuners.com/tuning-guide/2gturbo/stage1power.php check out this page it will help you out alot. Good luck :thumb:

Without supporting mods there is no point in upgrading your turbo. You will see no gain from it whatsoever. Even though it may be tempting to get a big turbo and crank up the boost get the supporting mods first. You can get a decently fast car with all supporting fuel mods and IC piping and intake, exhaust on the T25 then when you upgrade you will be able to fully enjoy your turbo. Getting something like a T28 is going to be the exact same basically as your stock turbo and getting a 16g you will be limited to 13 or 14 psi and you won't feel any gain until you can get more fuel from it.

ummm... i think i phrased my original post wrong? i KNOW i'm gunna have to get upgrades. i'm asking what's the fastes cheapest way to do so. i need brand names and stuff. i already know about that link. and it is very helpful. but i'm asking what parts i should get in what order to make things get done cheaper and quicker.

well if you want to upgrade the turbo soon then start with exhaust, intake, must get a MBC and a boost gauge. Then look at larger injectors (depends on the turbo you go with), fuel pump, and something to tune it as well, SAFCII+pocketlogger for instance. Hope this helps

The first thing I did

Logger---$150
rewire fuel pump---like $10
14b---$125 (gotta love e-bay)
port o2 and turbine housing--free
homemade mbc---$5
16psi---free

This netted a good gain for the money. It was like night and day difference the car. But I happend to have enough stuff to get by without an install kit. Just my opinion but it is a good starting point.

In my opinion, you should get a boost guage before anything. The stock one just isn't accurate. After that, get an intake pipe and air filter. eBay ones are just as good as name brand (Injen) ones, but not nearly as pricey. Next, get a boost controller. BUT before you turn your boost up, you are going to need a different blow off valve. 1g DSM BOV's get the job done for cheap. Then onwards to the fuel and such.

Many people say to get a datalogger first so you know what is going on in your engine. With the logger, you can also post logs and codes and the fine people on this site will help you fix any problems you might have.

Don't forget to do free mods first :thumb:

luvmygst, what all exactly did you do? that's kinda the route i'm lookin' to go. cuz i'm in college and i don't have A LOT of money. and i wanna at least have a decent ride come summer time. eventually i can really start putting stuff into my car.

Well, know this-the stock engine + turbo were designed to run with just that configuration and not a larger/higher-flowing, etc. turbo. If you want to add a turbo, technically, you can just slap any one on (that uses the DSM manifold). You'll find that you really won't get much out of it whether it's a 16G, EVOIII 16G, T28, T28 Killer, etc. if you don't have some of the basic supporting mods: boost & EGT gauge, MBC, intake, exhaust system, IC pipes, IC, injectors, fuel management, etc. I'm not trying to discourage your question but I guess I'm just trying to understand what direction you're trying to go with your DSM.

Autometer Triple Guage Pod $30-50
Autometer Ultra Lite -30-0+30 Boost gauge (used from a friend)
Homemade MBC
Filter w/ Maf Adapter $10-20 (ebay)
Custom UICP w/ 1g flange $20-30 (made with cousins help)
Used the LICP from a 97-99 (they dont have the ### silencer box)
14b ($50 friend...again) perfect tho
SS Oil Feed Line (ebay, forgot price.
Bomz Intake ($20 used from friend again...)

That is what i have right now for performance mods. I customized my water lines for the 14b. I had the water lines for the t25 and the 14b and ended up using them and just cutting a few shorter and using like transmission hose to connect them. It was truly not hard at all. Bought a SS Oil Feed Line from ebay, took maybe 30 mins tops. I had my engine apart somewhat so instead of putting the t25 back on, i swapped in the 14b. Sold the t25 for like $120 too LOL. My only problem right is the housing is cracked but i actually have a small 16g housing that i could swap on when it gets warmer. Let me know if you have any questions.

My needed future mods:
FMIC (extremeintercoolers 2g 7" kit)
going to weld together my own 3" exhaust most likely using the megan 3" downpipe
Fuel mods (pump, AFPR, SAFC, etc.)

This will probably help as good as any, as far as what kind of brand name items you should buy, remember, everyone will have an opinion on that, listen to the DSM Wisemen and remember going the fastest and cheapest way on upgrades aren't always the way to go. One word of advice though, do the upgrades in the order listed. Good luck

you gotta love the dsm cars. the versitility is so awsome you can go many different routs. I personally am going this route. first i got all the hard piping from the filter to the intake. then got a 3" down pipe from ebay, it bolted up great and no leaks. then i got a AVC-R just cuz i like the tune on the go feature. i am currently buying a evo 16g turbo cuz it will be all i need for what i am going to do with my car, considering it is a daily driver. the 16g is fairly expensive but it is internally wastegated and i dont want to deal with all that exturnal crap. the v-faq on the upgrade path is a great little tool to follow if you want to go the cheapest way for easy horsepower.
