The "good" news.

1.811 60ft
8.238 1/8 ET
82.238 1/8 mph
11.153 1000 ET
81.69 1000 mph
13.614 1/4 ET
93.37 1/4 MPH

I didn't plan on going to the track last night, but a buddy called me up and said he was going to head out to Milan. I buttoned up a few last minute things on the car and headed out. I put about 3 gallons of 110 in the tank for a nearly 50/50 mix with 93, figured it couldn't hurt if I wasn't getting knock and turned the boost up a little. I kept the mbc where it was for the trip there and the first run, boost gauge read 14psi. Good enough for a baseline for me.

The launch felt good, and I hit all my shift points good, right up until 4th gear, I missed it and had to go searching for it. But I met my goals for the year, I just wanted to get a 13 second pass in. Unfortunately being a little overexcited I decided to try again and see what the possibilities were without missing 4th gear.

The "Bad" news.
I missed 4th again, rev limiter hit the moon, and I apparently left oil all over the track. I didn't even notice it, car seemed to be running fine and I dragged it all the way to the parking area. Why I didn't look at my gauge who knows :ohdamn: Trust me when I say I punished myself for that one, I hate being "that guy".

At first I thought it was just my line to the oil pressure gauge, but come to find out it's somewhere deeper. I blocked off the oil pressure line and put some oil in and it's coming from behind the timing belt cover. Not sure if I torched the bearings or not yet, pretty good possibility at this point :banghead:

Might be down for the rest of this year, perhaps a rebuild over the winter, then look for 12's next year.

Thanks again to Phil1320 for recommending a bunch of good modifications and info, at least I hit my goals for the year, and still know it had more in it!

I'm not sure how much it currently weighs but for what is still there. All interior plastics, all stock seats, about half the front bumper, full dash minus glove box, and alot of other weight to remove.

I'll post an update once I figure out the damage.

Well, you did hit your goal for sure, with ease I might add. Looks like easy 13.30's without the mishaps. At least you now have a new "baseline." Glad I could help a bit, and you're welcome....anytime, but, damn, wish you got some clean passes. Sorry about the misfortune. If you have a balance shaft removal kit, there's a good chance you popped the plug for the front shaft............

....let me know what you find........

Either way, you had a walk in the park to hit 13.60's and 12's are easily in the cards.......

good job! with racegas and 20-21 psi you will be in the high 12's. Of course you need an afc to control your fuel.

good luck!

This car will definitely run well into the 12's. AFC is not NEEDED to run 12's. I ran all the way down to 12.0 with no aftermarket fuel control at all on a stock ECU and injectors.

Your car is amazing phil! I dont know how you do it. How did you get all the way to 12.0 without checking knock and fuel control? I bet that race gas helped you in every aspect.

Today i got an afc 1 for my car because i really need it to fine tune. Even though i have a maf-t, that was not enough as after 5k rpms it would not pull and hesitate a little. Im also adding a fpr to dial it with the 550's. Should be heading to the track very shortly so we will see some results.

Thank you, I appreciate that! I still to this day have never checked knock or logged a run, I know, it's crazy. I've just been -seat of the pants- all this time. The car has been on the dyno numerous times over the years to monitor how it runs, but, conditions do change once you hit the street or track, but none that ever affected the talon.

When I had no fuel control on the car the car ran FAT in the 10's even at 21 psi...it was always safe. And, yes, I always ran VP 117 octane.

I have had a 2G MAF, AFC2, ADJ FPR, and 550cc injectors in the car for at least 5 years now. Back then if I had the AFC the car could have made more power. But at the weight the car was it took only 266 HP and 282 TQ to run 12.0 @ 112.

The AFC will definitely help you fine tune for sure and I wish you luck in your goals!

I had almost all the MAF-T components years back, but I sold it all and went with the 2G MAF= more basic and easier to get going. BUT, I wonder how that blow through would work for me now? Get rid of the restriction before the turbo may help the repsonse of the little 14 as well.

Ok, now that we've jacked his thread, SBstar, where are you?:D

Thanks Phil! I pulled the timing cover right quick yesterday thinking about that plug, no luck, didn't have time to dig deeper yet. Work kills me on weekends. I think you're fairly accurate on the lower 13's were easily in the cards, similar 1/8 mph and ET resulted in others running between 12.9-13.2. Oh what could have been eh?

Also I think once I get up in the 20-21psi range (see next year) low 12s are possible, not just because of the extra power, but I have a ton of weight I still want/need to tear out, and I'm fairly positive I still have a couple boost leaks currently. Also I hope to have other modifications by then as well.

And don't worry about the thread jack Phil, your car is amazing and alot of my inspiration for this car comes from that one!

Thanks for all the kind words to everyone here. I know things are only going to get better with this car after I get this issue figured out. I'm doubting there will be anymore track outings this year, so hopefully it'll be ready by opening of next year. I definately need more seat time, the first run I made was my second time ever going down a drag strip, and i do not street race so it is very rare for me to be slamming gears at high rpms. As I told Phil earlier, my only goals for the car this year were to get to the track and get a 13 second pass. Missing accomplished, minus broken dsm.

Definitely will get better no doubt! Well, hopefully you'll know what the source of the leak is soon enough. For your second time at the track, that is very respectable! 1.81 is a decent 60' time too. That will improve with seat time. Once the car is 100% reliable at the track, you will then be able to concentrate on the driving, and maximizing the launch with tire pressure and such.

Glad I can provide somewhat of a "model" for you with the 14b project. Of course, more weight out will transform into instant FREE speed. I'm sure you'll be in the 12's next year for sure, and probably deeper than you think! Even boost at 17-18 should net mid 12's.

Ok, well, keep us posted on the cause of your problem and I'm sure by next year you will be set to go:thumb:

Congrats on meeting your 2009 Goal!:applause:

Thanks Phil, I am psyched to have netter some 13's this year, and knowing low 13's were in the cards with proper shifting just makes me happier. I know 12's will happen next year.

I was quite proud of the 1.81 60ft. That is utilizing daily driving tire pressure along with the fact these are some old crappy all seasons with very little life left and some dry rot starting from sitting for approx 2 years OMG Honestly I was going to switch back to my steelies before I went to the track for the newer tires. The second pass I got a 1.85 60 ft and I messed up the launch a little and only revved up to 5k vs. 5500 on the first launch.

You're welcome!:thumb:

Looks like you might have tipped high 12's with your comparison to Gooberlog's runs......

Next year will be a good year for you I'm sure. Depending on the cause of the oil leak, you could get back out this year, right? Actually the strip I go to closes at the end of this month, so it may be a rush.

Well, hopefully you'll get the chance to further investigate the cause.

Talk to you soon.

If I get lucky with something I could get out again this year, our track closes the first week of Nov. I think. Yesterday I didn't get very far, started tearing back in and then the wifey got home and had a house she wanted to go look at. So far I know what it isn't and that's about it. Isn't the oil pump seal, isn't the b/s plug. I'm unable to get the crank bolt out without having an air compressor here so I'm unsure about the main seal as of right now, I'm going to start working my way upwards and see if it might be the cam seal/seals. Might have to put the t-belt back on and attempt a crank to see if I can figure out where it is coming from. Not exactly thrilled about trying that.

Well, I hear you there......but it may be the easiest, least time consuming way to figure it out......you can't see any oil traces under the covers there? Where it might possibly have been coming from? Well, I hope you can find it, and get it fixed so you can get one more shot at it this year, maybe dropping into the 12's. I know what's it's like trying to find time to work on the car. Hopefully, you'll get the time and it won't be to killer to fix, both cash and time-wise.

I have today and tomorrow off, I will at least figure out where it is coming from and order whatever part/parts I need. Can't really tell where it's coming from, no real good traces under the timing cover since the t-belt through oil everywhere. Being the T-belt is soaked in oil I'm pretty sure I'll be ordering a new one of those as well for security reasons.

I put the T-belt back on and had the wifey start the car while I peered under it, no oil was coming out of anywhere so I had her shut it off. I checked a few things and started it again, no oil coming out...Decided to try revving it and see if a little extra oil pressure would cause the leak. Well, no leak but I got myself a nasty rod knock. :notgood: I can't really tear into it being that I live in an apartment complex so it's going to have to wait until I move or can find another place to work on it, fortunately that should be in the somewhat near future. The one guarantee is it won't be back out this year. Until I pull the oil pan and see the extent of the damage I won't decide how far I'm going to go with a rebuild. Might just be a new crank and bearings, but you never know if anything else was damaged so I'm going to hold off on buying anything until I know what I'm up against.

For 2009 I had two goals
A. Get to the racetrack
B. Run a 13 second pass

I accomplished both those goals, next year I'm going to add one more very important goal, don't blow it up.

Well, sorry to hear that news.

But, like you said, you did meet your goals for this year which is key.:thumb:

I've met my goals too, so anything now is just "bonus."

I made an update on my thread that isn't so cool. You won't see it because it "auto-merged" the post with my last post, so that it wouldn't "bump" my thread back to the top, have you seen that happen before? Anyway, there is an update on my thread if you want to check it out.

Got the weather.
Got the truck and trailer.
Hope I got the car............

### is the mod list?

My profile is up to date :D But the basic rundown.

Built trans (welded diff and double syncroes)
ACT 2600
SBR 1st generation cast manifold
2.5" custom open dump O2 housing
3" turboback (punishment dp, megan catback, 3" VSR test pipe)
Buschur MBC (14psi)
Walbro 255lph pump
hard intake pipe w/k&N and properly hacked maf (Phil Beers style)
GR2 front struts
14b w/ported 7cm hotside

That about sums up the mods.

hard intake pipe w/k&N and properly hacked maf (Phil Beers style)

:D Thanks........I'm trying to remember who originally let me in on the divider wall removal secret because it was not my discovery, I think it was Greg Horn, who's 12.40 is stll listed on the 14b fastest times list. It was a long time ago though, I can say that. It worked, and that MAF will most likely make its way into the VR4. The aircan is actually thermal barrier coated, as that black painted metal gets hot as all hell and holds in alot of heat.

I guess we can call it Greg Horn style then :D Either way it appears to work pretty well. I've had issues with improperly hacked mafs before (messed with the screw) and there are no issues with the maf in this configuration. Thanks again Phil for sharing.
