Ok so I'm building my first engine(6 bolt swap), I've built cars before and am mechanically inclined but I have never taken on an engine. So here are a few questions I pose:

1. Do 2g pistons share the same circumference as 1g pistons? If not how much boring needs to be done?

2. What cleaning solutions should I use on internals?

3. What are the torque specs that I need to use on certain bolts? (cam shaft, rods.etc)

4. Other than valve guides, idler/tensioner pulleys and water pump what should I replace other than worn and damaged parts?

5. Should I use stock head gasket or go with a cometic or an equivelent?

Any other words of wisdom is definetly appriciated! So thank you in advance!!

1) Yes 2G pistons have the same circumference as 1G pistons. 1G guys drop them in all the time because of the higher compression. Instead of 7.8:1 it is 8.5:1.

2) I would recommend you spend a few bucks and bring it into a machine shop to have them clean it properly. If you took everything apart yourself and gave it to them just to clean it won't cost you much. The equipment they use will be far more superior than anything you could buy at a parts store to clean with.

3) You'll have to pick up a service manual on CD or an actual service manual to get all of the stock specs. If using ARP hardware it specifies it. Stock headbolts are not reuseable just in case you didn't know.

4)Good thing to replace is the oil pump/front case. Common thing that you think will be ok ends up taking a crap down the road will eat turbo's and lead to bearing failure or oil leaks. Especially on a 6 bolt since it probably has a load of miles on it. Another thing I would do while you are there is eliminate the balance shafts. Gain HP and saves your motor since they do fail especially on a high mileage 6 bolt block.

5) Stock head gasket is fine if you don't plan on running a lot of boost, but if you really want to not have to worry about blowing a head gasket easily get the 4 layer metal OEM headgasket. I love them things. I have even reused them before.

Other than that the most difficult thing is doing the timing belt. Make sure everything lines up perfect or say bye bye to your valves.

I will now hijack this thread . And maybe help this guy to . I to am doing first rebuild . What are the parts that I will not think about replacing ? I know frontcase with gears , water pump , rear main seal . Things like that . But I would like a list of all parts to replace including seals , gaskets , hardware and so on . We should really have a tech article on this . You know a list of parts or checklist of some sort .
