Finished mounting my gauge on door vent...pics

so i know some of you have a single gauge in your door vent, did you just make it or is it out there to buy somewhere?

don't know where to buy one... but i know it can be made fairly easily.

A friend of mine bought a boost gauge for his 97 gsx, and he wants to put it in that door vent. I was going to give him a hand with it, and I was just wondering, for those of you who have done/seen it, how do you route the vacuum line? I was thinking I could go through the rubber boot into the fender well, but then can you get access to the engine bay from that space? I have searched and found a few pictures of the finished product and a few websites on how to make a faceplate for the gauge, but none explain how/where to run the vacuum tubing.

You could run it through the rubber boot the goes from the body to the door that has the speaker wire and door like and window wires. But why would you put it in the door vent, its unique, but it would not be safe to look at it while driving?

It's just the spot he wants to put it., he has a close to stock car, and doesnt want to start removing the dash vents or cutting into the dash. I personally hate A-pillar mounts, and this is a nice spot to mount without hacking the car apart too bad. You dont constantly look at a boost gauge anyway, just occasionally glance, and the door vent isnt too out of the way to look at safely, I dont think (it all comes down to personal preference). This is a whole other argument I dont want to overtake the thread LOL.

Like I said in the initial post, I know you can run it through that rubber boot with the door wiring harness, but from there where can you go with it? after passing through the fender, can you run it up into the engine bay (since there is a space between the fender and the drivers kick panel)?

Look, its not even my car. This is turning into exactly what I didnt want it to turn into. I respect your opinions, but I am just looking for some applicable help here, not alternative solutions.

yes you can run the line thru the rubber boot but be warned its not the most accessable area to snake a line thru. If you do it like this the lines dont come out in the fender though they come out by the drivers side kick panel so you would just need to then run the line from under the dash thru perhaps the steering column boot and into the engine bay then to a good boost source.

I ended up running the vacuum line into the fender well (took out the fender liner) along side the foglight and ABS wiring, and cut a hole in the wiring harness boot for the door and fished it into the door. I got power for the light from the constant hot for the electric windows. Took a while, but turned out really nice. While we were working, we removed the BCS restrictor. Turned out to be a pretty productive little afternoon LOL.

Here are a few pictures of the install. I think it looks pretty decent.

I think the setup looks great. Never knew greddy sold gauges, I have to look into them now.

How are his lights on his instument cluster so bright? I understand there's a dimmer switch but mines at peak light and it doesn't parts of the cluster aren't even dimmed. Bulbs maybe?

I like... what did you use to "glue" the mounting plate to the old door vent. I like the cleanliness of not having any screws showing.

BTW... i'm thinking of mounting my Voltmeter in this location. This is a perfect example of a gauge that doesn't need to be monitored all the time.

I used a DuPont made 2 part epoxy, basically the same as JB weld.
