Hello folks I have a question, since I like my ride looking as close to stock as possible, and obviously have to eventually worry bout emissions... I was thinking instead of doing the whole exhuast, that i get the turbo down pipe and cat and then at the end put one of those y fork pipes that you can block off with two wingnuts and a plate. How much hp could i see by this? I'm not sure if anyone knows wht im talking bout, its those like y pipe the bottom bolts into the exhuast coming from the engine one of the top parts bolts into the pipe going through muffler and junk and the other nub just sits there with a restricter plate until you take it off. Would this idea work, I like the stock/sleeper look of my car and that would be tainted by a huge fricken pipe i could fit a cd into

The same amount of HP you will see from an exhaust...look into en E-Cutout, this way you can have fun wthout stopping for 5 minutes.

This is a very subjective question because, depending on mods, you could gain 5-10 or 200 depending on how much the exhaust is holding you back. For example, me, having a 50trim and all the supporting mods on my new GSX, but no exhaust. I'll gain alot of HP from a simple piece of empty tube.
 
rather than using a plate and wing nuts, you just press a button from inside the car and that opens your exhause cutout door. Much easier, but it's more expensive. There are also ones that are activated with a cable that you pull from inside the car.
 
A cut-out is exactly what you have just described, you dont have to fabricate your own (but you could), they actually sell them. However, the one you described is a manual style cut-out and requires you to get under your car cover/uncover your extra horsepower. An e-cutout is an electronic cutout that uses a uses a source of voltage (your battery) to operate a switch that allows you to open/close your block off plate on the cutout from inside the car. PURE GENIUS. Good for track use, but is obviously illegal for street use.

One downside that I have heard about is that on high horsepower applications, frequent usage results in the block off plate not being able to fully stay close, when switch is in "close position". Not sure how valid this explanation is, but this is what I have heard. Anyone who has heard different, feel free to comment.
 
so a custom fab one would be cheap (cost of homedepot pipes and welding) and a flange for wingnuts, and an ecutout would just beattaching a motor to that flange??? if i custom fabbed it i could prolly hook one up later if i wanted i assume.? just curious on 14b running 15lbs fwd, 5 speed how much hp am i looking at? like 20-30?

He is worried about passing emissions and you guys are recommending cutouts to him? I think an emissions tech would have more of an issue with a cutout than a straight through muffler...

You'd be safer with a decent straight through muffler, unless you're worried about noise, not emissions. I don't see why you're so worried about having a large diameter exhaust, no one is going to point and laugh.
 
Some states are anal about noise, NJ fail me for noise twice.

edit: Oh and I only have 2.5". WTF Ha I just realize we have new smilies. :rocks:
 
I figured that if i did a cutout a emission tech wouldnt notice? As long as i had it capped i should be good right or is that a no no??? I'm not worried bout people pointing and laughing... I'm worried bout people seeing and running scraed, I don't know if there are many of you MD guys looking at this but I've had a problem getting people to race just because it says Tsi and 16 Valve DOHC Turbo on the side of my car, the last thing i need is an exhuast for them to say ohh ****

Yeah i agree i had a 90 tsi awd berfore i got my 91 gvr4 tsi awd aws, when the see the tsi on the back and on the skirts they said oh f that. i also had the compressor bypass valve atmos dumped where i live its all snobby a$$ kids in 7 series bmw's and s class amg's that think they own the world when they hear the bov dump they back off my butt and wont try anything, no one will race you around here i lived in eldersburg for a long time.idk if anyone knows about northern prkway .but they dont give a crap what you have they will race i got my a$$ handed to me by a ford festiva. ROFL before you roll over laughing he had a mazda 323 gtx swap t3t4 liguid to air aftercooler and e manage, he is running high 11's so i didnt take it to heart that much, i know what you mean tho man and could i get a link to the people that make that e pipe my brother has one for his wrx but at the time they didnt make them for 1g eagles i guess they do now, and he had no prob with his leaking at all,i loved it, super sleeper thats what i want for my galant i have no prob getting people to race it, its just a 4 door grocery getter right :shhh: untill the boost kicks in muaaaaaaahahaha then its kisses and hugs like 45 slugs :nono:

when i bought my car it neeeded a new front pasenger side fender and bumper, so im gonna get a mitsu bumper and just a plain ole fender, then get rid of ALL the badging. North Western parkway.. I tried up there they all wont race me last time i was there. Like i said they see Tsi, they all nearly crud their pants. You have a what !!!!!!! talk to u later. So yeah if u have a link or something thatd be great.

To maintain a more stock appearing TSi exhaust, I just got a dual tipped muffler, just bigger than stock. Looks good, sounds good, and is slightly less likely to be instantly noticed because it doesn't look like a pumpkin shooter. Just a thought..... it's what i did :cool: but definetly open up that exhaust, 2.5 is a good starter size especially for a 14b and similar sized turbo's
