So I've been looking around, and the only thread I can find is where the OP has a whistle that gets louder at higher RPM. Everyone suggested an exhaust leak, but I have a slightly different problem. I hear a whistle noise coming from what I think is my muffler, but it could be anywhere behind me. I can't check because it only happens when I press on the throttle a certain amount, and not when idling, only when actually driving, and it happens in every gear. I was thinking exhaust leak because of another thread, but it suddenly starts at a certain amount of throttle; not leading up to it. What could be causing this?

And while I'm asking about exhaust, I'll ask this as well. I was showing off for one of my friends by revving the engine and it made a crackling sound at a high RPM. It's supposedly a Megan exhaust, but the previous owner wasn't terribly truthful. I think the cat has either been gutted or it's a test pipe, but I'm not sure. Could that have let unburnt fuel through, and the noise was it burning in the exhaust?

As for anyone who has been in my other threads, I picked up my car from the mechanic the other day, and he had finished EVERYTHING! My car was finally done after months! Only to try and drive away to find out the clutch was leaking. I dropped it off again earlier today :(

Jack the car up, have a friend accelerate and listen to pin point the noise.

If this is done use jack stands... and make sure your buddy is not and idiot!

And for your honda sound maybe your hitting the rev limit? or just a crappy exhaust i have a cat delete and doesn't sound like a honda crap

I'll give it a shot, but I have to wait for the snow to melt :-( No garage, or even driveway.

And what do you mean Honda sound? The exhaust crackling? I didn't hit the rev limiter, and after I revved it, and let off the throttle, it crackled when it peaked and then went back down, not a continuous crackle

Back when i had my 97 RS it did the whistle thing. The weld holding the muffler on was cracked around the top.(was 100% stock car at the time)

Did it affect performance or anything?

I was listening to it again today, and I find it really strange that at a very certain point it starts to whistle. I'd back off the throttle until it was pretty quiet, then it would just stop, and with a hair more pressure, it would come back. If it were a leak, it would be continuous, right?

An exhaust leak can make all kinds of different noises. It can growl, vibrate, rattle, hiss, whine, howl, or even whistle.;) As far as the crackling sound that sounds like a gutted cat or test pipe so there's nothing to worry about there. If it absolutely is unbearable and drives you crazy I would say to continue looking for the source of the noise, but if not I would say just drive the thing.:D

1.)I'm not sure, but being that it was an RS "performance" was never really there to begin with.(at least with mine)

2.)Yes, just because you cant hear it 100% of the time doesn't mean its not leaking.(can go into detail if needed)

Although I do not have a DSM I have the same issue with the exhaust whistle.

Here are the specs for those interested. It is a 1992 Toyota Celica with 200K + miles on it. I bought it used 2 days ago so I do not know any history on it. It has a 1.9l, 4 Cyl Engine w/ 16 Valves. 5 speed Manual Tranny. The exhaust does have a cat in line and it passed Georgia emissions testing on Oct 10th 2011.

I have listened through a hose to the entire engine compartment, all of the underside of the car and the exhaust. The whistle is coming out of the muffler. I listened all around and the input side of the muffler and could not hear anything, but when I put the hose to the output and the car was revved I has to take the hose away from my ear it was so loud. As with other posters, it starts around the 2500rpm range and goes when not accelerating. It also seems to go away around 4000 rpm. So I have concluded that it is coming from inside the muffler. Visually the muffler has a coat of light rust, but is not rusting through. I assume replacing the muffler would fix this, but I wanted to confirm that this is the most likely place. I guess the one questions is could a whistle/leak between the exhaust manifold and the muffler produce such a loud whistle out of the back of the muffler? Again, that is the only place I can hear the whistle the loudest.

Thanks
