For the lack of an "ignorance" forum category, I'm posting my exhuast question in the "newbie" forum. In case this was the wrong choice, I apologize in advance for any inconvenience that I may cause anyone, especially moderators.

Now, with that out of the way I'll ask my question. Based on your own experience, which exhaust is the quietest:

Apexi N1 cat-back;
Diamind Star Specialties cat-back;
Buschur Racing cat-back; or
Thermal Research and Development cat-back.

I guess I'm one the those guys who go against the status quo, but I'm looking for the quietest 3 inch exhaust I can find that doesn't sacrafice performance. Lol, I know these are rigorous prerequisites, but any input would help.

i have a turbo back so i cant say for sure, but i believe the apexi is going to be amazingly loud. my buddy has a buschur on his wrx and that gets him tickets all the time. those are the two i can tell you about. dont know about the rest. a 3 inch exhaust will be loud. id recommend a new stereo with that :thumb:

I don't know why, but I had a gut feeling that the Bucshur Racing exhaust was going to be really loud. I've heard that Thermal R&D isn't quieter then most, but I've never heard anything about the DSS exhaust. However, if I were to get the DSS, I'd probably get their turbo back.

And for anyone who might me wondering, I'm not getting a 3 inch exhaust for my N/T that I have listed as my car right now. Lol, I'm getting a 95 TSi AWD soon, probably this weekend, and an exhaust will probably be one of my first upgrades.

well aside from the bucshur being really loud, it also has a sort of raspy sound, at least on the wrx.

I have a APex'i GT spec and its like a deep aggressive tone, not raspy and not ridiculously loud. Now my friend has an N1 and that is also aggressive and not raspy. my other friend has a thermal and I believe that is the quitest out of our exhausts. Hope this helps you out, the other exhausts I have not heard.

ummm, first of all, you can't base it on the wrx. wrx's only use half the engine to spool the turbo, so the other half(flat 4 remember) go right out the exhaust, so wrx's are going to be louder than a dsm no matter what you put on them, because half the cylinders aren't going through the turbo....thats also what gives them there unique sound. wrx's also have 3 cats with the stock exhaust, and still have 2 even if you go all the way back to the down pipe.

since its a turbo car, nothing should be obnoxiously loud, because the turbo quiets down most exhausts. if you put a high flow cat in, and a quality muffler, i don't think its going ot be TOO loud.

Check out those first few threads but the one that I found that actually caught my eye for what your looking for could be this next one right here.

Hopefully that helps some.

I got a 3inch exhaust from rnr and at cruising speeds (60-80) mines not loud at all. But if you get on the car near WOT (wide open throttle) then get ready to turn heads because that baby opens up!

Out of those choices you listed I think DSS is probably the quietest exhaust listed.

Wow.

Last I checked, the WRX boxer engine combined the two exhaust sides in the downpipe BEFORE going into the turbo, so that all 4 cylinders would be powering the turbine.

I have a full 3" turbo-back from Buschur(no cat) and that thing is LOUD, even at low speeds. I swear I set off every single car alarm on the streets around my area, when I head to the mall, I set off alarms 4 aisles away. Don't get me wrong, the tone is great(sounds like a V8) but it is extremely loud.

I have a 2.5'' cat-back from Buschur (MagnaFlow Muffler) and it's not obnoxious at all. I am really pleased with it's outcome; performance-wise and sound-wise. :thumb:

wait... you can set off car alarms with an exhaust? that would explain why the car i was parked a few cars down from at school kept going off when i was sitting there revving with my friend....

tiger your wrong, its just the passenger side cylinders.

Are you on crack? Why the hell would they design a turbo car and only have half the cylinders power the turbine? The exhaust leaves the heads and goes back to a collector and then through an Uppipe to the turbine, from there it leaves through the downpipe and out through the exhaust.

here is what a wrx header looks like... it clearly goes to a collector, which in turn goes to an up pipe (the wrx has a cat in the up pipe, the sti does not. this is why wrx people usually do the up pipe and down pipe as early upgrades). sure the routing is not as short as our car, but that is the nature of the flat 4. i know lots about wrxs... i was going to buy one until someone had a clean looking gsx for sale. ive never owned them but lots of my friends do and i have been under them, looked all around them, helped shop for upgrades, etc...

Alright, I just now realized that DSS doesn't make a 3 inch exhaust for 2 gen AWD's. Either that or I've come down with a case of myxedema and can't see it. So should I just buy the 2.5 inch?

you will be happier with the 3 inch in the long run. the 2.5 is quieter, without a doubt, but the 3 inch is better if you get a new turbo and stuff.
